TV guide to what’s new, coming back and ending

MANILA, Philippines – Regardless of the amount of television shows already in existence, we all clamor for the next big series that’ll keep our eyes glued to the screen.

The last few years have seen TV hits such as Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad (Recently concluded), House of Cards, How I Met Your Mother (Recently concluded), The Vampire Diaries, and Pretty Little Liars.

2014 is no different and promises to add even more shows to your ever-growing list. 

Series premieres

Here are 8 TV shows set to premiere in the remaining months of 2014:

1. PENNY DREADFUL 

 

Air Date: May 11

Network: Showtime

Cast: Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton

Penny Dreadful, set in Victorian London, brings to life iconic, horrifying, and supernatural characters of classic literature such as Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and chosen characters from Dracula. It’s a definite must for thriller/horror junkies as well as for fans of period shows. On the downside, TV Columnist Brian Lowry says that the monsters feel a bit Buffy the Vampire Slayer but that this “doesn’t blunt the brooding atmosphere or the grisliness of their handiwork.”

2. CROSSBONES

Air Date: May 30

Network: NBC

Cast: John Malkovich, Richard Coyle

Crossbones tells the story of the infamous pirate Blackbeard and his attempts to steal a device called the longitude chronometer. It promises to be action packed with classic beach scenes and is yet another one for period piece lovers. 

3. HALT AND CATCH FIRE

Air Date: June 1

Network: AMC 

Cast: Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy, Kerry Bishe

Set sometime in the 1980s, Halt and Catch Fire centers around 3 technology and computer experts who sought to rival and perhaps even replace IBM’s then well-established computer. The question of whether or not it is AMC’s next Mad Men – Praised by critics and viewers alike – remains to be seen. Regardless of its similarities to Mad Men, Halt and Catch Fire will reveal a side of the technology world most people aren’t aware of – coupled with the usual elements of drama and intrigue.

4. POWER

 

Air Date: June 7 

Network: Star

Cast: Omari Hardwick, Adam Huss, Leslie Lopez

Produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Power explores two contrasting worlds –life in upscale and glamorous New York and life in the violent and brutal drug trade. Little has been written about this show save for the trailers that have been released by Starz, but the concept is certainly interesting and promises 8 rather dark episodes for its first season.

5. THE MUSKETEERS

Air Date: June 22

Network: BBC America

Cast: Luke Pasqualino, Santiago Cabrera, Tom Burke, Howard Charles

Originally aired in the UK last January 19, 2014 on BBC One, The Musketeers follows the lives of Athos, Aramis, and Porthos, King Louis XIII’s personal bodyguards and defenders of all things moral, along with their new friend and companion D’Artagnan. It’s a period show with swordfights, damsels in distress, love affairs, and attractive men in renaissance costume.

6. THE LAST SHIP

Air Date: June 22

Network: TNT

Cast: Eric Dance, Rhona Mitra, Adam Baldwin

In The Last Ship, 80% of the world’s population has been killed and the fate of the rest of humanity lies in the hands of a naval destroyer’s crew. It’s one for fans of dystopian and end-of-the-world type stories with what will most likely be suspense-filled episodes.

7. RECKLESS

Air Date: June 29 

Network: CBS

Cast: Cam Gigandet, Anna Wood

A new legal drama set in Charleston, S.C., Reckless follows a secret love affair between a Yankee litigator and a southern attorney. Before you ask, the answer is no, it doesn’t quite appear to be just another Suits and though it may not cover topics as heavily as Law and Order, it promises to be nonetheless entertaining. 

8. VICIOUS

 

Air Date: July 6

Network: PBS

Cast: Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi

Previously aired on April 29, 2013 in the UK on ITV, Vicious, a British sitcom follows the life of a gay couple who have been together for 48 years. This brings together two of the most celebrated actors in the UK and promises nothing less than classic British humor – dry and witty.

Of course, we’re not about to leave behind the shows that we’ve already been following, and we certainly don’t want to miss the conclusions to the ones whose seasons are just about to come to a close. There are 22 of them—7 premiering and 15 ending.
