MANILA, Philippines – After arriving in Manila and soon after a guest spot on one of the morning shows on TV on Thursday, September 11, David Blaine reportedly requested his escorts to take him out on the streets of Manila to perform for regular people.

He was brought to a depressed community near Agham Road in Quezon City. According to one of the members of his retinue, Blaine wanted to bring his act to the less fortunate who couldn’t afford to buy a ticket to the show.

Frequently called the most exciting magician since David Copperfield. David is an illusionist and performance artist. This weekend he brings his act for the very first time here to Manila

Most Pinoys are familiar with Blaine through TV specials that have him performing magic not onstage or in a studio, but out on the streets, physically interacting with his audience.

Born in New York, he became fascinated with the world of illusion after witnessing a magic act in a subway at the tender age of 4. He’s never looked back since.

Besides magic tricks, Blaine has also attracted attention for stunts that push the limits of human endurance. In 1999, he spent seven days entombed in a plastic box and subsisted on nothing but a few tablespoons of water every day.

A year later, Blaine again made headlines for spending over 63 hours inside a block of ice. In 2002, he stood for 35 hours on top of a pillar 100 feet high and 22 inches wide in the middle of Bryant Park in New York.

All of the stunts were televised and showcased not just Blaine’s physical fortitude but his mental and emotional strength as well.

He has attempted several other death-defying stunts over the years, but he is still perhaps best known for his close-contact magic tricks that have baffled and fascinated millions of people all over the world.

He has done TV specials where he does magic for people who don’t even speak English, visibly enjoying the stunned reactions of the people he is performing for.
