5 juicy things to know from the ‘Mean Girls’ reunion photo shoot

MANILA, Philippines – The cast of the iconic teen movie Mean Girls is back together again, in a set of photos and an interview courtesy of Entertainment Weekly for the magazine’s annual reunions issue. 

Mean Girls, which starred Lindsay Lohan as the sweet new girl in school Cady Heron, tackled the comedy (and drama!) that comes with complex high school relationships. When Cady tries to fit in at her new school, she meets Regina George (Rachel McAdams) and her minions Karen (Amanda Seyfried) and Gretchen (Lacey Chabert) (collectively known as The Plastics), who befriend her – until everything goes awry. 

Along the way, Cady meets friends Damian (Daniel Franzese) and Janis (Lizzy Caplan), falls in love with hottie Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett), joins the Mathletes, and finally successfully navigates the high school drama. (READ: 10 ‘grool’ things the ‘Mean Girls’ taught us)

Mean Girls premiered in 2004, and the film is celebrating its 10th year. Head on over to EW to read the long interview from the magazine, but here are 5 amazing behind-the-scenes tidbits shared by the cast during the reunion. The 4 leads plus writer and co-star Tina Fey also talk about what went on before, during, and after the movie:

1. Rachel McAdams tried out for the role of Cady, as did Amanda Seyfried. Lindsay wanted to be Regina. “At some point I was like, ‘Oh, should Lindsay be Regina?’ And then Mark [director Mark Waters] and Lorne [executive producer Lorne Michaels] had the good sense to say, ‘No, she gets to turn into Regina,’” said Tina.

2. Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert were very close and bonded on set. “I had just graduated high school! It was terrifying. I don’t know what I would have done without Lacey Chabert. She was my angel. She took me in, and we’d hang out in her trailer and listen to Dido,” said Amanda. 

3. Here’s what Tina Fey said about a sequel: “At the time we did want to start the conversation about the sequel, and for whatever reason I was like, ‘No!!! We shouldn’t do that!’ Now I look back and I’m like, ‘Why?’ But now, no—it’s too late now.”

4. One of Rachel and Amanda’s favorite scenes? The part where a chihuahua attacks Amy Poehler, who plays Regina’s mom. “They, like, pinned a piece of a cocktail wiener into her bra. I thought this dog was going to tear her apart. It was very effective. She was such a pro through it,” said Rachel, recalling the scene.  

5. The cast talked about where the mean girls plus Cady would be today, 10 years after high school, and our favorite is what Rachel said about Regina: “Regina is a Real Housewife. She’d have too much time on her hands, for sure. She’s probably found all her other Reginas.”

According to Lindsay, Cady would be “with Oprah in Africa working at children’s schools with a family, teaching girls to be nice to each other.”
