In a surprise win, Gina Rodriguez took the Best Actress award in her category for Jane the Virgin, resulting in one of the evening’s most emotional speeches.

“This award is so much more than myself, it represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes,” she said.

Previous winner Jared Leto led a tribute to the people of France and the victims of the recent Charlie Hebdo killings before presenting the Best Supporting Actress award to Patricia Arquette for Boyhood

It was a big night for Amazon series Transparent, which won best tv series (musical or comedy) and best actor for Jeffrey Tambor. “This is much bigger than me,” he said, visibly emotional. “I would like to dedicate my performance and this award to the transgender community. Thank you…for your courage, for your inspiration…thank you for letting us be a part of the change.”
