Sarah G: You don’t have to be perfect to be a princess
You don't have to be trapped in a dungeon, or be saved by a knight-in-shining armor, she says

MANILA, Philippines – Fresh from her collaboration with Disney on song “The Glow,” Sarah Geronimo wants to provide a more inclusive, more welcoming approach to girls (and even boys) everywhere, when it comes to the idea of being a princess.

In Disney’s 2015 calendar, Sarah portrays the plucky, steadfast heroine Rapunzel, from the hit movie Tangled. The photos were just recently released. Also in the calendar is superstar Kim Chiu, who takes on the character of Mulan.

Di mo kailangan maging trapped sa isang dungeon, or to be saved by a knight-in-shining armor,” she told reporters, Friday, January 9.  “Kailangan mo lang pinawalaan ang sarili mo that you are a princess – that you can pursue your dreams on your own and not depend on other people.”

(You don’t need to be trapped in a dungeon, or to be saved by a knight-in-shining armor. You only need to believe in yourself that you are a princess – that you can pursue your dreams on your own and not depend on other people.”)

This was Sarah Geronimo’s main message during the launch of the Disney Calendar 2015, a new collaboration with Disney Southeast Asia.  She was all smiles at the Museum Cafe in Makati, where she spoke of her experiences working with the company.

Sarah said that the character Rapunzel has also made her relate to the princess in so many ways. “We are minsan trapped by our own insecurities, our own fears, our failures, our rejections na how it becomes relevant sa pag-grow natin as a person.”

An example of this includes a lot of criticism she’s getting for the role.  “A lot of people are saying na, ‘eh, di naman siya bagay as Rapunzel eh kasi hindi daw pang-model yung mukha ko, or ‘yung alam mo nang typical na mga komento ng mga tao.”

(A lot of people are saying that my face isn’t like a model’s, or, well, you know what people typically say.)

She, however, sees the localized Disney calendar as both a blessing and an opportunity, an opportunity to inspire her young fans especially. “Naging identified kasi yung Disney princesses sa mga foreigners, ‘yung mga blonde, mga magagandang mestizo at mestiza, and now nakikita natin na naging princess yung mga artists sa Southeast Asia.”

Ito yung message na brinebring-out nila na hindi mo kinakailangan na talagang maging mestiza or to be perfect to become a Disney princess. In every girl there’s a princess.”

(The princesses have been associated with the foreigners, with beautiful mestizos and mestizas, and now we see artists of Southeast Asia as princesses.

This is the message that they want to communicate, that you don’t need to be mestizo or to be perfect to become a Disney princess. In every girl, there is a princess.)

When asked what to look forward to in 2015, she says, “Ngayong 2015, I’m going to be doing a movie under Star Cinema and Viva Films and sana concert before the year ends.”

“We want to give something new eh,” she says, when asked for the details of the movie. “Para naman sa mga kababaihan.” (For the ladies.)

Disney is just one of Sarah’s biggest projects.  Aside from balancing careers in singing and acting, she is also currently on The Voice of the Philippines as a coach. – Rappler.com
