Toni’s emotional message for Paul: You will be number one
'...he really stayed, and he proved to me that true love waits,' says a tearful Toni of her fiance. Toni and Paul announce their engagement to the public

MANILA Philippines – There was not a dry eye in the house when superstar actress, singer, and TV host Toni Gonzaga confirmed her engagement to filmmaker Paul Soriano on The Buzz Sunday, February 1.

The sit-down interview revealed details of the romantic and intimate proposal. Present only were Toni’s parents Pinty and Bonoy, and Toni’s younger sister, Alex, a rising star. (READ: Alex, Bianca, celeb friends on Toni Gonzaga, Paul Soriano engagement)

Paul proposed late in the evening a day after Toni’s birthday, and surprised Toni – who was apparently already in her pajamas.

The Gonzagas are a tight knit family – and it’s long been known that Toni’s protective parents impose 12 midnight curfew. Toni and Paul have been together for 7 years, nearing 8. (Read Rappler’s interview with Toni here.)

Toni, 31, and Paul, 33, spoke at length about their feelings for each other, but at the end of the interview, Kris Aquino, herself a good friend of Toni and Paul, asked Toni about her message for her fiance.

This is Toni’s emotional speech, uttered as she struggled to hold back happy tears:

“There are a lot of things na gusto kong sabihin sa kanya. ‘Nung nagsasalita siya, when he was going to propose sa akin, iyak na ako nang iyak, kasi nagflashback lahat sa akin from day one…I remember there are times that he would ask me, “‘For the past 7 years, Tin, I was never a priority in your life, it has always been God, your family, your work, and me. I’m always the third. And I’ve accepted that for 7 years.

(There are a lot of things I want to tell him. When he was going to propose to me, I cried and cried, because I flashed back to everything, from day one.)

Sabi ko, I always prayed to God, sabi ko, ‘Lord, kung darating ‘yung time na mapagod na si Paul, kasi hindi na niya kayang maghintay, sabi ko, Kayo na ang bahala pero he really stayed, and he proved to me that true love waits.

(I always prayed to God, I said, ‘Lord, if the time comes that Paul gets tired, tired of waiting, I said, it’s in Your hands. But he really stayed. He proved to me that true love waits.)

And he really waited for me, kaya sabi ko, ‘If I become his wife, hindi na siya number 3 priority, I will make sure that he will be my only priority, and everything else is secondary na lang.

So I’d like to thank him for enduring everything, for the patience, for understanding, and thank you very much for honoring my parents.

Nung ginawa mo ‘yun, ‘nung 7 years, na-realize ko, ito yung lalaking gusto kong maging ama ng mga magiging anak ko, kasi in-honor niya ang mga magulang ko and he will be a good father kasi naintindihan niya ‘yung naramdaman ng tatay ko

(When you did that, and those 7 years, I realized, this is the man I want to father my children, because he honored my parents. He will be a good father because he understands how my father feels.)

Toni also said that they personally approached the ABS-CBN bosses to tell them the news of their engagement. Paul said that of course, Toni would continue to do the showbiz work that has made her very happy over the years.

Toni will in fact soon begin work on a new romantic comedy, which she says will likely be her last as a single woman. – Rappler.com
