The best of Coach Apl's 'The Voice PH' punchlines

MANILA, Philippines – One of the more entertaining things about watching The Voice of the Philippines is hearing coach Apl de Ap’s unique way of commenting about the performances he likes.

Often comparing them to funny (and seemingly unrelated) topics, Coach Apl then delivers the punchlines, to the delight of the audience and fellow coaches.

Let’s take a look at some of the jokes this season:

1. Kai Honasan and the pedicab

When Kai Honasan finished her blind audition singing “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry, Coach Apl said he hoped to get her on his team.

Apl: “Pedicab ka ba?” (Are you a pedicab?)
Kai: “Bakit?” (Why?)
Apl: “Pedicab ba sa team ko?” (‘Can you be on my team?’ punning on “pedicab ba,” which sounds like “pwede ka ba” or “can you” in Filipino.)

Ultimately, she joined Team Bamboo until her eventual elimination on February 8.

2. Made in heaven

During the blind auditions, Apl handed Vanessa Monot a rose and of course, a funny line which had Coach Lea Salonga on her feet.

Apl: “Puwedeng may tingnan lang ako? (Can I just look at something?)

(Goes to her)

Apl: “I just wanted to check if you’re made in heaven.”

3. Apl’s beef

Team Apl’s Mackie Cao opened the second week of Live Shows with her performance of “Making Love out of Nothing at All” by Air Supply. Coach Apl was floored, and he had this to say:

Apl: “Mackie, baka ka ba?” (Are you a cow?)
Mackie: “Bakit?” (Why?)
Apl: “Kasi Mackie, CAO na!”

Here’s another cow-related joke, this time said to Bradley Holmes after his performance of “You Give Love a Bad Name”:

Apl: That performance parang karne! Rare ang talent mo! Well done! (That performance was like meat! Your talent is rare, well done!)

4. ‘Para akong traffic sa Edsa’

Apl said he could not move forward without Tanya during her blind auditions

“So kailangan mo ako piliin kasi pag hindi mo ako piliin, para akong traffic sa EDSA, I cannot move forward without you.”

(You have to pick me because if you don’t pick me, I’ll be like traffic on EDSA – I can’t move forward without you.)

5. ‘Di ako makahinga’

Alisah performed a rendition of “Lipad ng Pangarap” during the first day of the live semi-finals. Coach Apl was blown away by the performance, saying,

Apl: “Para kang asthma.” (You’re like asthma.)
Alisah: “Bakit?” (Why?)
Apl: “Kasi di ako makahinga.” (I can’t breathe.)

6. PNP

Daryl’s performance of Gary V’s “Take Me out of the Dark” got Coach Apl talking about the police.

Apl: “Pwede kitang ipahuli sa pulis.” (I’m gonna get the cops after you.)
Daryl: “Bakit?” (Why?)
Apl: “Kasi yung pagkanta mo PNP. Patok na patok.” (Your performance was PNP (also stands for Philippine National Police) – winner.)

7. Facebook status

Here’s what he told Mackie Cao after her “Sirena” number:

“Parang Facebook status – ang sarap i-like. Dapat i-share pa sa buong mundo ‘yung performance na ‘yun.”

(Just like a Facebook status [that performance] – feels good to ‘like’ it. That performance should be shared with the whole world.)

8. Coco-mpleto

He initially said Alisah’s name was Coco.

Apl: “Coco [ang pangalan mo] kasi ikaw ang coco-mpleto ng team ko!

(Coco [is your name] because you will coco-mplete my team!)

9. Samantha Felizco’s Blind Auditions

Apl: “Alam mo bagay sa ‘yo yung kanta, bagay sa ‘yo yung look mo, bagay talaga lahat! Pero alam mo kung ano ang mas bagay?”

(You know, the song suits yo, the look suits you, everything is great! But do you know what suits you better?)

Samantha: “Ano po?” (What’s that?)

Apl: “Ako!” (Me!)

10. ‘You for the rest of my life’

During the blind auditions of Thara Jordana, Apl said: “Alam mo (You know) I only need three things: sun for my day, the moon for my night, and you for the rest of my life.”

Bonus: That time Bamboo handed out an ‘APL’

Looks like Apl isn’t the only one who can deliver his famous punchlines. After Rence Rapanot’s successful performance of “Para sa Masa,” Bamboo had this to say:

“‘Yung performance mo tonight, deserves an APL – astig, panalo, and I just loved it, baby. Rence, sa lahat ng dumaan diyan… power ng mga vocals na dumaan itong gabi na ‘to, ito ‘yung paborito kong performance kasi totoo. My brother…wala talaga akong masabi. I’m speechless.”

(Your performance tonight deserves an APL – awesome, winner, I just loved it, baby. Rence, among all who walked the stage…all the powerful voices, this is my favorite performance because it’s real. My brother…I have nothing to say. I’m speechless.)
