Full recap: ‘The Voice PH’ top 4 at the grand finals, day 1

MANILA, Philippines – The finals for the second season of The Voice of the Philippines kicked off Saturday, February 28 following the selection of the top 4 on February 22.

Coach Lea Salonga and Coach Apl opened the show with a performance of “Feel This Moment,” with their bets Leah Patricio and Alisah Bonaobra. Coach Sarah and Coach Bamboo followed with “Sing,” performing with Jason Dy and Rence Rapanot.

Hosts Toni Gonzaga and Luis Manzano explained the rules, this time stating that the fate of the contestants depend fully on the public vote, and not partly on the coaches like the previous weeks. 

Mechanics 

There are 4 sets of performances divided into two nights: the first set of performances set for February 28, and the last set on March 1. 

After each set, the voting lines will be opened. This time, only ONE vote is allowed per sim.

The two artists with the highest vote percentages will be deemed the top 2 on Sunday. The voting numbers then go back to zero, and the top 2 will then move on to the grand showdown. The artist with the highest vote percentage will be deemed Season 2’s winner.

FIRST ROUND ON SATURDAY, February 28: Artist’s duet with guest artist

Alisah Bonaobra

• “Ako ang Nagwagi” with Ms. Dulce

Coach Lea commented that this duet really challenged Alisah, saying that her previous performances were easy compared to this one. “So now let’s see what the voters at home – they’re the ones you have to try to impress, not us, not anymore.”

Coach Sarah said she was still amazed by the performance, commending Alisah on her connection to the song. “Grabe, hindi madali ang ginawa mo kanina…But you did very well, at after ng performance na ito, bata ka pa at kahit ‘di mo inabot ‘to, connected ka. So congratulations, Alisah. Ang galing-galing mo.”

(Wow, that number was not easy to do…but you did very well. You were very young and even if you weren’t able to reach parts of the song, you were very connected. So congratulations, Alisah. You’re great.)

Rence Rapanot

• “Karaniwang Tao” with Joey Ayala and Bayang Barrios

Coach Apl commended Rence, saying that he sees Rence as an OPM artist in the future. “Hey Rence, nakapagjamming ka (you jammed) with the legends on stage because you deserve it. I love what you stand for, keeping OPM music alive. And I see you as an OPM artist in the future, so good job.” 

Coach Lea was more adamant regarding Rence, saying, “Anong future-future ka diyan? I see you as an OPM artist now. I loved this number. Mukhang nagrehearse kayo ng at least isang linggo. Bagay na bagay talaga. ‘Yung tatlong nagsasama diyan sa stage, at mukhang napakadali ng trabaho. ‘Yun ang nagustuhan ko sa number na ito. Sobrang gustong-gusto ko ‘to.” 

(Why wait for the future? I see you as an OPM artist now. I loved this number. It looked like you rehearsed for at least one week. This was so on point. The three of you on stage, you made it look easy. That was what I liked about the number. I really, really liked it.)

 Leah Patricio

• Song choice: “Muli” with Jed Madela

Coach Sarah commented on Leah’s performance, saying, “Ipaglalaban ko na magpatuloy ka, kahit matapos na ‘tong kompetisyon na ito, ipaglalaban ko kasi kailangan ka ng industriyang ito. You are a pro, and this industry needs a pro.” 

(I will fight for you to continue. Even if the competition will finish, I will fight for you because you are needed in this industry. You are a pro, and this industry needs a pro.)

Coach Bamboo agreed with Coach Sarah, saying that her comments were well-said. “Amazing performance, and congratulations.”

Jason Dy

• Song choice: “Wrecking Ball” with Charice Pempengco

Coach Bamboo loved the intensity of Jason’s performance. “You brought the game face, you are ready,” he said. 

Coach Apl commended Jason’s performance and Jason’s coach Sarah. “Hey, Jason, amazing job. You have grown so much in this competition. I’ve seen you dance, do all kinds of different things. Great job, Sarah, and congratulations with that performance.”

The voting lines were then opened, with the show recapping the duet performances of the top 4. 

SECOND ROUND: Individual songs

In this round, the singers’ coaches praised their performances and urged the fans to vote for their respective bets. 

Jason Dy, “With You”

Coach Sarah made the sign of the cross before asking fans to vote for Jason, saying that she will never forget the first time she encountered his talent at the Blind Auditions. “I held onto that [memory of the performance], pero napatunayan mo na there’s more to that. You helped yourself develop into a full-grown artist that you are now, because you are willing to learn.”

(I held onto that [memory of the performance], but you proved that there’s more to that. You helped yourself develop into a full-grown artist that you are now, because you are willing to learn.”)

Alisah Bonaobra, “Love on Top”

Coach Apl said he could describe many things about Alisah, saying, “Mahusay, malinis kumanta, mapagmahal na bata – pero sa akin, isang salita ka lang… pag-asa. Pag-asa ng bawat Filipino na katulad ko rin na minsan din nangagarap para makaperform sa stage na ito.”

(Excellent, smooth singing, loving child – but for me, you can be described in one word… hope. You are the hope for every Filipino like me who sometimes dreams of performing on this stage.”

Rence Rapanot, “Estudyante Blues”

During Coach Bamboo’s speech for Rence, he thanked him for his principles on OPM. “Kung babasehan natin from anong nangyari these past few months, diba[…] kung paano mo chinachampion ang OPM, team OPM, man.”

(If we base your performances from these past few months[…] how you championed OPM. Team OPM, man.)

Leah Patricio, “Titanium”

Coach Lea said that Leah has the goods to be a diva, and praised her voice. “Sa lahat ng mga kinakanta niya, yung boses ng Diyos lumalabas sa kanya.”

(In all her performances, the voice of the Lord comes out of her.)

 

The voting lines were again opened, and the temporary standings (before round 2 on Sunday) were revealed, with artist T getting a little over 40% of the votes. The order was not revealed. 

This could all still change, however, as we head into the final rounds on Sunday, March 1.
