'The Voice PH' top 4: Their best performances of the season

MANILA, Philippines – Four finalists, 4 compelling stories – and onstage, the strongest talents to emerge, by judge’s choices and audience voting, on season 2 of The Voice of the Philippines.

Rence Rapanot, Alisah Bonaobra, Jason Dy and Leah Patricio will compete in the final rounds of the two-part finale Sunday, March 1.

Two will be cut sometime during the evening, leaving two to face off in the last round.

Let’s take a look at each of the contestants’ best moments on the show – as well as some of their more uneven performances.

Alisah Bonaobra

Alisah’s audition was buzzed about from the start. Fans recognized her as the young girl whose video singing the Frozen hit “Let It Go” at a mall went viral. The young singer, 19, is a street vendor, according to her profile on the show’s site. She’s hoping for the chance at success to help her family and to continue her education.

Best: “Laserlight”

Dedicating the performance to her beloved grandfather, Alisah delivered the difficult song with power, control, and grace. The youthful song choice and overall performance had coach Lea saying, “With that I think you’ve just turned yourself into the strongest contender on your team.”

Also amazing: “Bituing Walang Ningning”

A little shaky: “Let It Go”

It wasn’t that the performance wasn’t great – this was, after all, the song that first launched Alisah into the spotlight, and there was definitely something beautiful about her coming full circle back to that moment on stage.

But the praise that night just wasn’t as effusive as in her other performances, and there were definitely other moments where Alisah shone much brighter – her “Lipad ng Pangarap” and even her “Unconditionally” battle with Abbey Pineda come to mind.

Jason Dy

Jason, 24, had coaches Sarah and Lea singing praises for him after his stellar blind audition, showing off his signature falsetto and range in the Sam Smith hit “Stay With Me.”

Throughout the show, Jason also talked about channeling his pain to improving his skills (Jason’s parents are no longer together, and he especially honors his mom, who works abroad). This has led to some beautiful performances from Jason:

Best: “Kahit Kailan”

This was the showstopper which no doubt had many viewers seeing a different side to the affable and put-together performer.

In this number, Jason let go of the previous week’s flourishes and got down to the meat of the slow, plaintive number – until it built to a breathtaking high note that had fans reaching for their phones, catapulting Jason into the top 8.

Also amazing: “Stay With Me”

A little shaky: “OMG”

Jason showed off his skills as a total performer, delivering with his usual charisma and very impressive dance moves, but this took the limelight over his strong vocals, which didn’t get its share of the spotlight that week.

Still, judges liked the performance, noting that there was little Jason couldn’t do. And the following week, Jason shut it down with the unforgettable “Kahit Kailan.”

Leah Patricio

Audiences fell in love with Leah’s vocal control, always tinged with a softness that kept the big notes from being overpowering. Leah 35, hails from Tondo and actually isn’t new to the music world, according to her The Voice bio. This competition marks another chance for Leah in the industry, and she’s seized every moment.

Best: “Queen of the Night”

Power ballads and big songs by the likes of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion are a no-brainer for the powerhouse singer, but she took it to another level with the opening notes of “Queen of the Night.” She was at first mysterious and captivating, then showed off a tough side when she ripped into the rest of the song with daring and gusto.

Also amazing: “Healing”

A little shaky: “Because You Loved Me”

Leah Patricio was one of the most consistent performers this season, but this number followed her “Healing” from the previous week – an emotional number that had Lea Salonga crying what she called the “first tears of the season.”

Comparatively, this wasn’t a standout compared to Leah’s memorable music moments, but is still a strong addition to her lineup of performances this season.

Rence Rapanot

Only 22, Rence, a farmer from Laguna, had all 4 coaches turning after his passionate, emotionally charged “Mateo Singko.”

Let’s not forget that his was the blind audition that had Apl calling BFF will.i.am in a bid to have Rence join Apl’s team. Ultimately, Rence joined up with coach Bamboo, who guided Rence through a stellar season, championing Filipino music all the way.

Best: “Para sa Masa”

“Nagkagulo ang Resorts World dahil kay Rence!” said host Luis Manzano after Rence’s performance. (There’s a commotion here in Resorts World because of Rence!)

This is the performance that prompted Bamboo to join in on Apl’s funny jokes: “‘Yung performance mo tonight, deserves an APL – astig, panalo, and I just loved it, baby. Rence, sa lahat ng dumaan diyan… power ng mga vocals na dumaan itong gabi na ‘to, ito ‘yung paborito kong peroformance kasi totoo. My brother…wala talaga akong masabi. I’m speechless,” he said. We were speechless, too.

(Your performance tonight deserves an APL – awesome, winner, I just loved it, baby. Rence, among all who walked the stage…all the powerful voices, this is my favorite performance because it’s real. My brother…I have nothing to say. I’m speechless.)

Also amazing: “Mateo Singko”

A little shaky: “Creep”

Rence is all heart and sincerity and is at his best when he is singing the words of Filipino greats, which might be why his battle with Casper Blancaflor, singing “Creep” by Radiohead, just wasn’t as jawdropping as the rest of his strong showing this season.

Even the judges were divided, with Apl and Sarah naming Casper as their pick for the Battle. Rence won, with Casper getting “stolen” by team Lea.
