'Breakup Playlist' director Dan Villegas and writer Antoinette Jadaone also share their favorites

MANILA, Philippines – Even the biggest stars aren’t immune to heartbreak. And what better way to cry it out than with a sad breakup song playing in the background?

Sarah Geronimo and Piolo Pascual are starring in the upcoming movie The Breakup Playlist and recently shared their favorite breakup tunes with fans at a blogger’s conference for the movie Thursday, June 25. (WATCH: Piolo Pascual, Sarah Geronimo in ‘Breakup Playlist’ trailer)

Sarah:

Ako po “The Scientist” ng Coldplay. Kapag naririnig ko iyon talagang nararamdaman ko uli yung sakit and talagang malungkot yung kanta na ang ganda-ganda rin,” Sarah said.

(For me, “The Scientist” by Coldplay. When I hear that song, I really feel again the pain and the song is really sad, but still so beautiful.)

Sarah also shared that another song that makes her lonely is “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.”

“We live in a world na akala mo perfect ang lahat. Akala mo sa surface perfect ang lahat especially showbiz– ang saya-saya lagi. Hindi ka pwedeng magalit…pero ang realidad ng buhay naming mga artista, pinagdadaanan namin yung struggle na may pagkakataon na malungkot kami pero may kaharap kaming audience… sila kailangan sila please,” she added.

(We live in a world that everyone thinks is perfect. You think on the surface, everything is perfect, especially in showbiz – everything is always rosy. You cannot be angry…but the reality of life is as actors, we go through the struggles where we may be lonely, but when we are faced with an audience, we have to entertain them, to please them.)

Piolo for his part said that he likes any song by Coldplay.

“It sets me in the mood anytime of the day,” he said. Another song that made an impression on him would be “All I Want is You” by U2, which he mentioned in an interview on Aquino and Abunda Tonight Wednesday, June 24.

The film’s director Dan Villegas (English Only, Please) and writer Antoinette Jadaone (who directed the hit That Thing Called Tadhana), who also happen to be a couple, also shared their own breakup tunes.

Dan said his go-to is “With Or Without You” by U2:

Antoinette said: “”Kahit anong puwedeng kantahin sa videoke, mga Aegis, Whitney Houston, Someone Like You.” (Anything you can sing karaoke.)

Sarah and Piolo were also asked what song best describes them. For Sarah, she mentioned “The Greatest Love of All.”

“And ‘The Climb’ po. It talks about my faith po sa Diyos. Naniniwala po ako kasi na kahit nakarating na ako doon sa stage ng career ko may mga pagkakataon pa rin na  tinatanong ko ang sarili ko na ‘do I deserve this?’ Ang dami ko pang dapat patunayan.”

(That love is the love of God and my family. Sometimes we have dreams that we think we’ve already achieved, and we are going to be happy and complete, but not just yet. And “The Climb.” It talks about my faith in God. I believe that I’ve already reached a point in my career, but there are still times I ask, ‘Do I deserve this?’ I still have a lot to prove.)

At the event, Sarah and Piolo also performed the movie’s theme song “Paano Ba Magmahal.”

In the movie The Breakup Playlist, Sarah and Piolo play Trixie and Gino, who fall in love after Gino asks Trixie to join his band. While it’s smooth sailing from the start, things begin to turn sour between them when insecurities arise.

Both actors said that they have learned much from their characters.

Mas real life yung mga situations niya, yung mga pinagdaanan niya,” said Sarah. (This is more true to real life, the things she experienced.)

Yung mga pinagdadaanan ng young adults…nandoon tayo sa stage na adults na tayo and we have to make decisions for our own.

(There are lines in the movie I’ve uttered in real life. What young adults go through…we are at the stage we are adults and we have to make decisions for own. You have a family, you have parents, people who know you, who lived before you, but you have to make decisions for yourself. But others want other things for you.)

Piolo talked about humility and forgiveness, the lessons he learned from playing Gino.

Yung pagmamahal niya sa puso niya and humility. Learning to accept your flaws and asking for forgiveness, and the willingness to become a better person.

(The love in his heart, and humility. Learning to accept your flaws and asking for forgiveness, and the willingness to become a better person. If you do not set aside your pride, you won’t know yourself, you won’t know what your faults are as a person.)

As this is the first time they worked together in a movie, Sarah said that she admires Piolo for his humility and kindness even given his superstar status. (READ: Sarah Geronimo: Iba talaga si Piolo Pascual)

Here’s what Piolo had to say about Sarah: “What I like about Sarah is her heart. There is so much that she can give. She’s not just a good actress or singer. she’s a good person,” he said.
