Miss Universe Paulina Vega hits Donald Trump for anti-Mexican rant
Donald Trump calls Paulina out on Twitter

MANILA, Philippines – Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega is the latest to express dismay over Donald Trump’s negative comments about Mexican immigrants – a comment that drew a sharp barb from the US presidential hopeful.

On Instagram, Paulina criticized Donald’s comments about migrant Mexicans  especially as it involves the whole Latin American community. Paulina is from Colombia.

Donald had accused migrant Mexicans of bringing “tremendous  infectious disease” into US territory.

To this, Paulina said: “I find Mr Trump’s comments unjust and hurtful. As a Colombian and as Miss Universe, I want to show my support and validate the sentiments of the Latin community.”

She added: “The Miss Universe Organization works independently from its owners. For the past 64 years, they have created partnerships with great charity groups and have helped thousands of communities. Their legacy of uniting countries from around the world has been inspiring to many. If the Miss Universe Organization shared any anti-Latin sentiments or any type of racial biases, I wouldn’t be in this position today.”

Paulina also said: “I strongly believe that dividing and categorizing humankind only holds it back. Acknowledging and embracing the differences that exist across humanity is the first step in real and substantial development. We must strive together in order to improve the common good.”

As a Colombian and as Miss Universe, I want to show my support and validate the sentiments of the Latin community. The Miss Universe Organization works independently from its owners. How Donald reacted to Paulina’s sober retort was far from surprising. He called her a “hypocrite.”

‘Immensely offensive’

On Facebook, Asian American fashion expert and make-up artist Jeannie Mai announced and explained her decision to pull out of her co-hosting duties in the Miss USA pageant, centered on Donald’s rants which she condemned as “immensely offensive.”

Jeannie, who had co-hosted the various Miss Universe events over the last 5 years, said that when she announced her “heart-felt decision to support the women of Miss USA by remaining on board as a co-host” last week, she was focused only on the contestants.

She said that when she made her earlier decision, she “was under the impression that Mr Trump would no longer be involved in the production of the show in any capacity what so ever.”

Jeannie said, howeverl that “given Mr. Trump’s ongoing antics, including his most recent episode today with the current Miss Universe, it is clear that Mr Trump’s actions have and will continue to distract focus away from the real stars of the show – the women involved in the pageant.”

“Therefore, I am respectfully withdrawing from my responsibilities and commitment as co-host of Miss USA,” said Jeannie.

She said, however, that still still wants to help the contestants  by lending her support to this year’s Miss USA “and to make the donation I promised to her platform and charity.”

Donald’s anti-Mexican immigrants tirades had been strongly criticized by Latin countries, which pulled out their contestants from the Miss Universe pageant which include Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica. (READ: Costa Rica withdraws support for Donald Trump’s Miss Universe pageant)

Last week, Macy’s announced it was cutting ties with the businessman after NBC and Univision made the decision not to broadcast the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, which are owned by the Trump Organization. – Rappler.com
