MANILA, Philippines – This year, he ran and lost in the congressional race in Camarines Sur. But Aga Muhlach says he has no regrets throwing his hat in the political arena.

“No regrets at all,” the popular actor and one-time political candidate said of this “very unforgettable” experience.

“I learned so much from what happened. You don’t really get everything. There is a proper time for that.”

Aga takes pride in the people who would have become his constituents.

“I was able to be with so many hardworking people in CamSur. They took me to places that I have never been before. I’m in my early 40s pero ngayon ko lang napuntahan ang mga lugar na iyon.” (But it’s only now I’ve been to those places.)

“I met with many barangay leaders and I heard all their problems involving the environment, [health], education, and other things na kulang sa kanila [that they find lacking].

“That motivated me to run para matulungan ko ang mga taong ito [so I can help these people]. Pero kahit na natalo tayo [But even if we lost], it doesn’t mean that I will not fulfill my promise to these people.”

“I am setting up my own way to provide [assistance]. It’s my own little way of saying, ‘Thank you’ to these people who gave their time and effort to help me during my campaign.”

The actor is still being persuaded to pursue politics. This early, he is being offered to run for senator in 2016.

But Aga won’t even consider that option.

“Hindi na natin kaya ‘yan, national election na kasi ‘yan. Hindi ko kaya ang commitment sa ganyang kalaking posisyon.” (We can’t go there, that’s a national election already. I can’t handle the commitment that goes with that big position.)

“I just want to concentrate on one place and that is CamSur. I actually filed an election protest. Hindi ko lang alam kung ano ang mangyayari.” (I don’t know what will happen.)

“But I am praying that things will work out well [for] the people of CamSur, kahit na hindi ako na-proclaim na congressman nila [even if I’m not proclaimed their congressman].”

There are talks that Aga will have a show together with Ogie Alcasid in TV5. The singer-comedian signed an exclusive contract with TV5 Tuesday, August 6.

“Hindi ko pa alam ang mga gagawin ko [I don’t know what I will do yet] for TV5. But I am willing to work with Ogie. If that happens, it will be the first time that I will be working with him.

“His wife [Regine Velasquez], nakatrabaho ko na [I’ve worked with] in 3 movies as my leading lady. The last one we did was ‘Of All the Things’ and it was a box-office hit.

“I am happy that Ogie is now a Kapatid. Magkakasama na kami sa isang network nila [We’re now together in one network with] Sharon Cuneta and Derek Ramsay.”

There are movie projects lined up for Aga but he wants to lose weight first.

“I’m undergoing a 3-month diet and exercise program. I want to look good and fit by September. Yun kasi ang schedule na binigay sa akin to start shooting a movie.” (That’s the schedule I was given to start shooting a movie.)

“Hopefully, I will be back in tip-top shape by then. Or else, father roles na lang ang ibibigay nila sa akin [they’ll just keep giving me father roles],” Aga says, laughing. – Rappler.com
