MANILA, Philippines – Young actress Joyce Ching is having the time of her life playing the mean girl in GMA-7’s weekly suspense teen serye, “Dormitoryo.”

The Kapuso teen plays Airiz de Ocampo, the sarcastic and fashion-conscious Queen Bee of the mean girls on campus. In the series, she gets to bully Hazel (played by Lauren Young), a new student and resident of the dormitory where her best friend, Maika (Winwyn Marquez), used to stay before she was found lifeless on the campus grounds.

Joyce said she had no problem playing the mean girl since she’s portrayed this type before.

“The very first kontrabida role I played was in ‘Endless Love,” remembered the 18-year-old actress. “I’m always the kontrabida to Barbie Forteza. I was her kontrabida in ‘Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin’ and ‘Paroa, ang Kuwento ni Mariposa.’

“In our last teleserye together, ‘Anna KareNina,’ hindi ako kontrabida doon [this time I wasn’t the antagonist]. Kaya parang na-miss ko ang maging mataray [I’ve missed acting snooty and mean]. So it’s nice to get back in the shoes of a mean girl.”

Experimenting with the part

As Airiz, Joyce was given as her peg Rachel McAdams’ character in “Mean Girls” and Leighton Meester’s Blair Waldorf in “Gossip Girl.”

“They told me to play around with my role,” said Joyce. “Airiz is snobbish, mischievous, and very sarcastic. And she’s up-to-date with the latest fashion so that adds up to the character I am building.

“Mas enjoy ako playing Airiz because mayaman siyang kontrabida. [I enjoy playing Airiz more because she’s a rich type of villainess.] Wala lang siyang magawa kasi bored siya [She has nothing to do and she’s bored], so she picks on other girls.

“In my past kontrabida roles, mga mahihirap sila kaya may reason sila to be bitter at magalit sa mundo [my characters were struggling and they had reason to be bitter and angry at the world].”

In “Dormitoryo,” Joyce is also caught in a love triangle with Lauren and Enzo Pineda who plays the campus heartthrob Burn Chavez.

“May mantra si Airiz dito [Airiz has a mantra here],” said Joyce. “What Airiz wants, Airiz gets—and she gets it fast.”

“I have this longtime crush on Burn, who has this secret relationship with Maika. When Maika is found dead, that’s my chance to get him. But then Hazel comes into the campus scene and Burn likes her. Umiral na ulit ang pagiging bad girl ko kasi may kaagaw na naman ako [My bad-girl side prevails because I have a rival].”

Is Airiz a suspect in Maika’s death?

“That’s the mystery in our series. We are all suspects, and Hazel is out to determine what really happened.”

On a different, lighter note, Joyce is happy with her relationship with Kristoffer Martin, who is being groomed as a prime-time leading man in the teleserye “Kahit Nasaan Ka Man.”

It was a pleasant surprise to Joyce, she said, that her boyfriend is being paired with Julie Anne San Jose.

“I was happy [to hear about their] team-up. Kaibigan ko po si Julie kaya alam kong magiging maayos ang team-up nila.” (I know this will turn out well and I’m a friend of Julie.)

“Plus, pareho silang kumakanta kaya maganda ang kalalabasan ng series [Plus, they both sing, so I’m sure this series looks promising].

“I always tweet kapag palabas na ang ‘Kahit Nasaan Ka Man’ [whenever the program is being shown]. It’s my own little way of supporting their teleserye.” – Rappler.com
