That Filipinos are musically gifted is a major understatement. A 10-year-old proves this is so, effortlessly.

BUDDING #PINOYPRIDE. 10-year-old Rachel Andal composes music and keeps them in her head -- and heart

MANILA, Philippines – The moment I heard about Rachel Andal, I was immediately reminded of another story we ran in October 2012 about a 7-year-old girl from England who had written her first opera, “The Sweeper of Dreams.” Her name is Alma Elizabeth Deutscher.

Rachel reminded me of Alma because, like Alma, Rachel started composing her own music at 7 years old. Today, she is 10 years old and is still composing music, sometimes only in a hour.

The amazing thing is that she doen’t even write lyric sheets yet (only one composition is written on a lyric sheet as of writing, written with the help of her current piano teacher). She keeps all her 22 compositions in her head.

When asked how she remembers each of them, Rachel just gave a shrug and a smile: she just does.

Rachel and mom Zsazsa, dad Ramon, and brother Kevin sat down with Rappler and shared with us their story a day before they left back for Canada after spending the holidays in the Philippines.

Rachel also sings (watch out for her rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in the video) and even has advice for her fellow kids on following their dreams.
