#BestOf2013: Winners of the Rappler Social Media Awards

MANILA, Philippines – The last votes for the 2nd Rappler Social Media Awards came in as revelry ushered in the new year. We asked netizens to choose – from a list of finalists that was also crowdsourced – the #BestOf2013 in 6 categories.

Rappler readers were able to vote on two platforms:

1. via Facebook, by liking and sharing the photo on our Facebook page. Every like and every share were counted separately. 

2. on Twitter, where favorites and retweets were counted separately as well, while quoted tweets were not.

So, here are the winners you picked:

 

Best Pinoy Celebrity
Ryzza Mae Dizon 

This is just one of the awards that the 8-year-old Ryzza Mae Dizon – or “Aleng Maliit,” as she is fondly called by her Eat Bulaga family – got during the year. The little star with big talent was also named Yahoo! OMG Awards’ “Child Star of the Year” and was “Best Child Performer” at the 39th Annual Metro Manila Film Festival. For the Rappler awards, she beat Jasmine Curtis Smith, Megan Young, and Richard Yap.  

Best Pinoy Athlete 

Alyssa Valdez 

Alyssa Valdez, 20, UAAP’s top scorer in women’s volleball, is a full-time AB Psychology student at the Ateneo de Manila University. This native of San Juan, Batangas, has made numerous TV appearances and is very popular among college sports fans. Her social media clout is not bad either, with over 100,000 followers on Twitter. Trailing behind her by a small margin in the Rappler awards tally were the Teng Brothers, the NU Pep Squad, and Gilas Pilipinas.

‘It Takes A Man and A Woman’

The John Lloyd-Sarah Geronimo starrer was released on March 30, 2013 in the Philippines and grossed over P375 million domestically and P580 million internationally. According to ABS-CBN News, the film was the second-highest grossing Filipino movie of all time in April, and is one of the highest of all time. Other nominees in this Rappler awards category were Pagpag, OTJ, Sana Dati, and Transit.

Sarah Geronimo

She’s known to her fans as the “Popstar Princess,” and after 10 years in the business, the multi-awarded singer and actress shows no signs of slowing down. Geronimo got her start after winning in the popular talent search program Star for a Night. Several multi-platinum albums and box-office smashes later, she still charms her way into the hearts of millions of Filipinos. The votes in this category showed Up-Dharma-Down a close second, followed by Bamboo and Yeng Constantino.

Elevator girl

Social media catapulted her to fame. Most of us would hardly notice the person who pushes the button to get us to what level of the mall we want to go to. But it would be impossible to ignore Cherry Alejandrino – also known as “the elevator girl” – because of her infectious humor. Dave Pronto was riding the elevator at SM Olongapo when he noticed Cherry put a cheerful twist to her routine job, and decided to take a video of her and upload it on YouTube. It went viral immediately.

Despite being a temporary worker, her optimism was enough to inspire thousands of netizens. “Pag welcome ko po sa tao, kumakagat po sa kanila eh. Sinusuklian po nila ng ‘Thank you,’ “Ganyan ka ba talaga?’ ‘Opo, because I need and I love my job.’ So tawa po sila nang tawa. Sa pagtawa nilang ‘yon, nakakawala po ng pagod,” Alejandrino told Rappler.

(People like it when I welcome them. They respond and say, “Thank you,” “Are you rally like that?” “Yes, I am, because I need and love my job. They laugh and laugh. When I see them amused, it makes me forget about being tired.)

LSS (Last Song Syndrome) of the Year

‘Ikot-Ikot’

Who says OPM is dead? Most people felt Sarah Geronimo’s heart-wrenching hit “Ikot-Ikot” was this year’s LSS. This is the third category where she wins in this year’s Rappler Social Media Award.

Sarah G shows off her dance moves in this video. The lyrical hip-hop choreography is something we rarely see in OPM videos. The music video uploaded by Viva Music’s official YouTube account has 1,777,707 views as of this posting. “Nasa ‘yo na ang lahat,” “Pinalaki,” and “The Fox” were also nominated in this category.
