MANILA, Philippines — God heals through people, through mothers.

I will always cherish the memories I have of my mother. Words cannot even capture — nay, grasp — the immeasurable love I have for her.

Her undying devotion to helping the weak and empowering the broken go beyond the hippocratic oath she took when she graduated from med school — and as God as her witness, she delivered.

So much so, that it unfortunately affected her health.

In 2008, she was diagnosed with stage 2 pancreatic cancer. The odds were overwhelming. I remember the terrible feeling of uncertainty that gripped the hearts of everyone that was close to her.

She soldiered on, shrugged off all thoughts of imminent death, and continued what she believed was God’s plan for her. She alloted time from her daily routine to help others, everything from consultation to treatment.

She even organized free clinics for those who cannot afford to get treatment in hospitals.

On May 27, 2009, she quietly passed on to the afterlife, her loved ones beside her to send her off to God’s arms where she belongs.

Now that she’s gone, all I have left are the photos, memories, and the determination to be half the person she was. I can only hope that I do not disappoint. – Rappler.com
