Pick your poison! Grab a few basic essentials, release your inner bartender, and try out these cocktails for yourself

BOOZE BASICS. Master the following recipes and become your own bartender! Image by Mara Mercado/Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – There’s nothing quite like a well-made cocktail to wind down with after a long week. Heading out to your favorite watering hole every weekend can take its toll on your pocket, though. So, if you’ve ever wanted to try out mixing your own cocktails at home but have no idea where to start, we’ve got you covered.

At the launch of the Diageo Reserve World Class Bartender of the Year, we asked brand ambassador and mixologist Hannah Waters for her tips to help you get started. Pick your poison, grab a few of these basic essentials, and try them out for yourself!

Gin
A recent survey says Filipinos are the biggest gin drinkers in the world. The classic Pinoy favorite would be gin mixed with pomelo juice, but if you’re feeling a little experimental, Waters recommends a gin and tonic or a Tom Collins, which is gin with lemon soda and simple syrup (a mixture of sugar and water.)

Rum
Bored of your usual rum and coke? “A daquiri is just sugar, lime, and rum, but it’s a classic cocktail that really champions the rum. If you just want a mixer, try rum and gingerbeer,” says Waters.

Vodka
Vodka, according to Waters, is a blank canvas and you could pretty much pair it with anything. We recommend a lemon drop, which is vodka with lemon juice and simple syrup, or a kamikaze – vodka, lime juice, and triple sec.

Tequila
There’s more to tequila than just shots. Waters recommends a tequila tonic, or tequila paired with grapefruit juice. “If you want a mix, you should look no further than a Tommy’s, which is tequila, agave, and lime.” Swap the agave syrup with triple sec and you’ve got yourself your classic margarita.

Whiskey
You’ve probably eyed that bottle of Jack your dad keeps in the liquor cabinet. Not quite ready to enjoy it on the rocks? Waters suggests a whiskey soda for the faint of heart. “You can pair it with Coke. It’s a cereal base so you can mix anything with it. If you want to get creative, you can try milk.”

Looking for something to warm your chilly nights? Waters recommends a hot toddy. Mix together lemon juice, honey, warm water, and some whiskey for a soothing blend. Another easy to make drink using whiskey is a whiskey sour: whiskey, lemon juice and simple syrup. Take it a step further and add triple sec to the recipe to make a bourbon triple sour – just make sure you’re using bourbon whiskey!
