With all the options life has to give, how do you make your decision?

OUR WAR WITHIN by Daniel dela Cruz

“Life is a transition, a journey. Each step we take affects those around us. We are defined by the doors we choose and how we go through them: some doors are locked, others are wide open. And some doors, we’d be surprised to find that, though closed, need no key but only a gentle nudge to let us through. And as a door closes, others take its place; it is our choice to look back at the closed door or to venture forward to open new ones.”

MANILA, Philippines – Sculptor Daniel dela Cruz couldn’t help but wax philosophical about Doorway to Decision, his one-man exhibit which opens at the Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo City on May 20. It is his 10th exhibit, which he also considers his largest.

From his early beginnings in 2007 (holding most of his exhibits at the Ayala Museum’s Artistspace, displaying his one-of-a-kind metal sculptures), dela Cruz has now progressed to a new direction in his work. This latest exhibit will be done both indoors and outdoors at the Pinto Art Museum; his sculptures have found new freedom and size given the ample space.

Dela Cruz has also done exhibits in Singapore (Breath and Balance) and, most recently, in Fabrik Contemporary Art HK (Ms. Interpretation). The same gallery carries distinguished artists Takashi Murakami, Damien Hirst, and Andy Warhol, to name a few.

I CHOOSE HOW I LIVE by Daniel dela Cruz

The exhibit Doorway to Decision is inspired by Robson Grant’s Door to Decision, tagged as “one of the 100 best poems on life.”

“This is my breakthrough exhibit … really getting into mainstream Philippine art,” dela Cruz intimates.

He adds that he feels honored that neurologist and art patron Dr. Joven Cuanang — “one of the most respected art collectors” and gallery owners in the country invited him to hold an exhibit at Pinto, which literally (and serendipitously) means “door.”

Each work of dela Cruz features a deft blend of different metals: brass, copper, lead, iron, bronze — even nickel — which he bends, molds, and carves by hand to create fluid and graceful oeuvres d’ art.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO the Same Destination by Daniel dela Cruz

A Philosophy major at the University of the Philippines, in Doorway to Decision, dela Cruz explores the importance of making the right choices when faced with many options, of living with these choices and embracing the consequences of making them.

He says that we are defined by the doors we choose and how we go through them, as we take “a step into the unknown to discover new beginnings.”

He concludes, “To truly live life is to face the Doorway to Decision, and to step in.” – Rappler.com
