WATCH: Jean Valjean in emotional ‘Les Miserables’ Manila scene

MANILA, Philippines – As escaped convict Jean Valjean, Simon Gleeson has given one of the most standout performances in the Manila run of Les Misérables. (WATCH: Rachelle Ann Go sings ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from ‘Les Misérables’)

At a special media call held the day before the gala performance, Simon performed “Bring Him Home,” a song from Act II of the musical. (WATCH: ‘Les Miserables’ Manila cast performs ‘One Day More’)

At the height of the student’s uprising – after blood has been shed, the young revolutionaries settle down for the night. Valjean fervently prays to God, “God on high / Hear my prayer / In my need / You have always been there.” 

“He’s like the son I might have known / If God had granted me a son,” Valjean sings, asking that Marius be spared from the violence – even at the cost of his own life: “Let him be / Let him live / If I die, let me die.”
