Presenting the winners of this year's iPhone Photography Awards

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Some of the best of smartphone photography have been awarded in the 2014 iPhone Photography Awards, and they don’t disappoint.

Yes, there are photos of children and animals, travel spots and architecture – the usual subjects seen on many an Instagram feed – but these stunning photos are on another level.

There are the animal subjects, such as the fox photographed by Michael O’Neal. O’Neal secured the 1st place award in the animals category for this photograph. The detail on the squinty-eyed fox is not unlike those seen in the character from the Wes Anderson film Fantastic Mr. Fox.

MICHAEL O'NEAL - San Francisco, CA United States. First place, Animals

Of course, there are photos of children – a social media favorite. But as in Melisa Barrilli’s photo of a child partially submerged in water, these images demand more than just a few seconds of viewing, and evoke more than the requisite “aww.”

MELISA BARRILLI - York, Ontario Canada. 3rd place, Children

Others are more introspective, such as Coco Liu’s photograph, which won 2nd place in the category Trees. The photograph features a silhouette of a man walking towards a lone tree. His reflection – and the tree’s – clear as day in the water below.

COCU LIU - Chicago - IL United States. 2nd place, Trees

In other photos, a unique perspective is center stage. While everyone in Hong Kong is busy moving forward with their day, this photographer, Chun Wai To, looks upward – and in the process, captures a stunning, priceless point of view.

CHUN WAI TO - Hong Kong. 2nd place, Architecture

Of these masterpieces, the picture that won the artist the title of 2014 Photographer of the Year was Julio Lucas’ photo of a barren, snow-filled landscape – but only barren in the sense that there is no one in the picture except for a lone figure traversing the length of the ice.

JULIO LUCAS Bradenton, FL United States. 1st Place - 2014 Photographer of the Year

The craggy mountains of snow tower over him, and more snow seems to descend upon the figure in small waves. While the more obvious artistry of the picture lies in the landscape, the image is all the more powerful given that the figure is completely alone.

No words will do these photos justice. See the rest of the winners in the slideshow below:
