Miss Colombia congratulates Pia Wurtzbach, thanks supporters

MANILA, Philippines – Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez on Wednesday, December 23, broke her silence on the botched Miss Universe coronation, thanking her supporters and congratulating the winner of the beauty pageant, Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

“After the storm comes the calm,” she wrote in both English and Spanish on her Instagram account @gutierrezary.

In her two posts, she thanked those who have “sent messages of support and strength” after she was briefly crowned 2015’s Miss Universe Sunday night, December 20 (Monday morning, December 21 in Manila) – only to be taken away minutes later after a mix-up in the announcement by host Steve Harvey.

After the storm comes the calm. I want to thank each and everyone of you who have sent messages of support and strength. Every one of you has become an incredible human being in my book and I am the most fortunate and thankful for having the support not only from one country but from the whole entire world. Your destiny is written for you. And my destiny was this. I was able to bring happiness to my country after becoming Miss Universe for only a couple of minutes… Today because of that COLOMBIA and the LATIN COMMUNITY are being talked about in every corner of the world. I also want to congratulate the Philippines for their new Miss Universe. The happiness that you must be feeling must be incredible. Life continues and in the future we will find out why things happen the way they happen. Thank you all for your LOVE SUPPORT and KINDNESS.

“Every one of you has become an incredible human being in my book and I am the most fortunate and thankful for having the support not only from one country but from the whole entire world,” she wrote.

“Your destiny is written for you. And my destiny was this,” she continued.

Gutierrez said she is glad to be able to “bring happiness to my country after becoming Miss Universe for only a couple of minutes.”

“Today because of that COLOMBIA and the LATIN COMMUNITY are being talked about in every corner of the world,” she said.

Cada uno de ustedes son seres humanos increíbles y soy la mujer más afortunada por contar con el apoyo no solamente de un País sino del mundo entero! She then congratulated Wurtzbach and the Philippines on the victory, and said that the “happiness that you must be feeling must be incredible.”

As of publication, the two posts had a total of 76.3 thousand “hearts,” or likes, from fans around the world.

Controversial

Gutierrez’s posts come two days after she was mistakenly crowned Miss Universe in front of hundreds of people at the Planet Hollywood and Casino in Las Vegas, viewed on TV by an estimated 10 million people.

The Colombian beauty queen’s name was the one first read by host Steve Harvey during the climax of the more than two-hour coronation show – but minutes later, the TV host returned onstage and apologized, and announced the correct order of winners.

She appeared shellshocked, along with the winner Wurtzbach, while previous Miss Universe queen and fellow Colombian Paulina Vega transfered the crown, sash, and bouquet from her to the Filipina titlist.

The snafu surprised the audience and became an instant social media storm, mostly focused on Harvey’s faux pas.

In an earlier post on Instagram, Gutierrez acknowledged the incident on Instagram, saying that the moment that she wore the crown will always stay with her.
