Pia attends the 'High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS' plus meets Department of Health secretary Janette Garin

MANILA, Philippines – Three days after attending the Miss USA 2016 pageant where she helped Miss USA 2015 Olivia Jordan crowned her successor, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach went to the United Nations headquarters in New York to attend a forum on HIV/AIDS.

On Thursday, June 9, Pia posted photos from her visit.

“Spent the day at the #UnitedNations High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS. It was an afternoon of panels and conversations on the importance of a Fast-Track approach,” she wrote.

In another post, she got to take her photo next to the country’s flag.

“Look what I found! Proud to represent my fellow country men  but most especially the LGBT community from all over the world. I have all of you in my mind as I attend today’s meetings for HIV/AIDS. I represent the Philippines and the rest of the Universe. I’m so humbled to be congratulated and thanked by highly respected ministers and directors from all over the world. There’s still much to learn but words and promise are just words without actions, right? I am your student #UnitedNations.”

Last December, Pia said that if she won Miss Universe, she will devote her time to promote her advocacy on HIV/Aids awareness.

“To be a Miss Universe is both an honor and a responsibility. If I were to be Miss Universe, I will use my voice to influence the youth, and I will raise awareness… [of] certain causes like HIV [and other issues that are] timely and relevant to my country,” she said. She was later crowned as the new queen after host Steve Harvey made a mistake announcing Colombia’s Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner.

In her interview with Cosmopolitan Philippines last April,Pia also said that people should get themselves tested. (READ: Pia Wurtzbach on her role as an ‘unconventional beauty queen’)

“There’s a stigma around HIV/AIDS. A lot of people are so afraid of those afflicted by the disease that they don’t even want to hug them.”

“I think it’s silly. For the people who have it, they automatically think it’s the end of the world, that they can’t live normal lives, which is not true. I don’t think a lot of people know how easy it is to get tested,” she said. – Rappler.com
