MANILA, Philippines – Newly crowned Miss World 2015 Hillarie Danielle Parungao said she joined the pageant because she believe it would open more opportunities for her.

In an interview with PhilStar.com, Hillarie, 24, said: “It’s because I feel like it would open more opportunities for me, not only opportunities but for my voice to be heard because I have an advocacy and I really want to focus on that. And I was looking for a better venue for that. A better venue for me to have a voice and what would be than Miss World Philippines.”

According to Hillarie, her advocacy focuses on eradicating child mortality through the Katuwang Project. Last September, she organized a fun run for the cause.

In the same interview, Hillarie described winning the crown as a surreal experience.

“I was praying so hard at the back. Parang..and then Megan came up to me and Valerie, it’s so surreal for me to see those ladies, come up to me.

“I was shouting earlier like ‘I have a crown, I have a crown. it’s something I will really treasure for the rest of my life,” Hillarie said.

Hillarie, who is from Nueva Vizcaya, is not new in the pageant scene. She represented the Philippines in the Miss Asia Pacific competition in Korea in 2014.

Hillarie said that with the Filipinos behind her, she is confident she can represent the country in Miss World in Sanya, China, this December.

Hillarie said that she is dedicating the win to everyone she loves.

“I dedicate this first and foremost to my family especially to my mom and to my dad  because this has been a dream for me ever since. And i’m doing this to make them proud,” she said.

As for the Filipino fans, Hillarie had this message: “I don’t want to promise anything, but I will do my best to get the crown.”

Hillarie beat out 25 other ladies for the crown.

In the Top 13 question and answer portion, Hillarie was asked about the significance of being a beauty queen in today’s society.

“As a woman, I uphold the value of compassion. And I want to be a beauty queen because I want to share this compassion to others. And this will lead to a greater society of love, of hope and a brighter future for everyone,” she said.

During the  top 5 question and answer portion, Hillarie was asked what was her life’s philosophy.

“I believe that compassion can open doors to many challenges in life… I also believe that in compassion, we get to understand other people, and in understanding other people we become a better society,” she said.

Hillarie succeeds last year’s winner Valerie Weigmann. She will represent the country in the Miss World pageant in Sanya, China on December 19. – with a report from Alexa Villano/Rappler.com
