Up for a serious scare this Halloween? Play these games!

MANILA, Philippines – Everyone likes a little scare once in a while. Life is more riveting when you don’t know what awaits you around the next corner.

If you don’t have the time and energy to go out, find the supernatural and get caught in a scary situation, here’s good news for you: you can experience the same thrill and suspense in the comfort of your home

Any of these games will easily get your heart pounding and blood pumping.

(Caution! These aren’t for the faint of heart. Well, except maybe the last one.)

DO YOU HAVE A GRUDGE?

Scare Rating:

This short but not-at-all-sweet game is based on the famous Asian horror movie “The Grudge.” Yes, the one with the little blue boy who stares at you from where you never thought he’d be.

I have to admit, I played this game in a well-lit room with just one eye open, hiding behind my pillow, and with only one earphone in. This didn’t stop it from scaring the hell out of me!

The game basically gives you tasks that you have to complete to win. They added The Grudge to it. To finish the tasks, you have to go inside creepy rooms, and if that wasn’t enough, even the hallway going to different rooms have their own horrific surprises.

The thrilling background music is timed perfectly with the ominous visuals. This strange, constantly escalating croaking sound plus the fact that certain rooms can get you killed at random may just make this one of the best online horror games out there.

There are just two downsides to this game. The first is that it is difficult to finish. I had to play it around 8 times before I finally survived long enough to complete all the tasks and go through all the rooms (up to the attic). The second is that you get no fanfare once you’ve completed it. There is no ending that tells you you’ve won, because (spoiler alert!) there’s only one ending to this game: death. Some would find that annoying, but I find it suits the game extremely well.

Despite these, this is one horror game I strongly recommend people to play. But only if what you’re after is a heart-racing, shriek-worthy, where-is-that-sound-coming-from, I-don’t-wanna-look-but-I-have-to-know kind of game.

THE HOUSE

Scare Rating

They say this is a fairly simple point-and-click game, but they left out one instruction: scream your head off. I had to turn the volume down to 30% for this game, but I can still hear the music in the back of my head. At points, I even drew my clicking hand away from the mouse because I wanted my whole body safely hidden behind my pillow.

The first time I played this, I got impatient because it seemed like no matter which of the few clickable items I clicked, nothing was happening. I couldn’t get to the next room and there was nothing going on in this one. But perhaps one lesson this game wants to teach is perseverance: just keep clicking, and eventually something will happen.

The visuals are very scary on their own: a black and white, dilapidated house with very few items lying around. The music plays a big role in adding to the atmosphere of mystery. To end every room experience is a slam-bam surprise that will surely have even the toughest of you jumping from fright.

Suspense is truly the name of the game. You click repeatedly on certain items, all the while wondering what’s going to happen and at which corner. And just when you’re about to lose patience, bam!

Although there isn’t much of a storyline to go on, the point of the game is to simply experience the house and go through each room to find out what happened to the family who lived and died there. Simple, easy, scary.

For those who still have doubts about playing this game, take these words of wisdom: the journey may seem long and tiring, but the ending will make it all worth it.

THE OUTBREAK

Scare Rating

This is a different kind of game from the first two, but just as scary. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure kind of movie-game. The zombies have finally taken over and it’s up to you to decide what course of action the team of struggling humans will take.

You play one of the characters in the movie and after every minute or so, you have to make a choice. The choices are simple: kill or save, stay or go, etc. There is an exciting kind of pressure that you feel when making choices, trying to figure out which one spells salvation, and which one death.

The quality of the video and special effects leave much to be desired, though. Honestly, there are scarier-looking zombies in Youtube make-up tutorials. The story itself is your average zombie apocalypse plot, except what makes this one stand out from the rest is that you have to live through every harrowing second of it.

What makes up for these, I suppose, is that this is something different. This may not be as outright scary as other games out there, but at least banks on being a horror-adventure with a twist.

It also begs the question: How long would you survive a zombie apocalypse?

HAUNT THE HOUSE

Cute Rating:

You play the most adorable ghost who is only looking for some peace and quiet but can’t get any rest, because of the pesky humans and their silly party! So, you go through the house, possess objects, and wiggle-jiggle those party-goers out the front door!

Don’t be fooled by its cute graphics and light background music though. It turns out that a ghost’s job is harder than it looks!

UPDATE: There’s a rumor going around that one of the scariest online horror games that exists is going to be available for playing once more on All Hallow’s Eve. If you look around hard enough, you might be able to play Hotel 626 between 6pm-6am tonight!
