MANILA, Philippines – As part of efforts to encourage usage of its Facebook Messenger product the social networking giant has announced a partnership with mobile operators to provide free or discounted data access to Facebook Messenger.

The announcement was made at Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona. Facebook will be partnering with over 18 operators in 14 countries. In the Philippines Facebook has an exclusive partnership with Smart.

The service applies only to users of the Facebook Messenger app on both Android and iOS and Facebook for Java. Smart has yet to announce if it will be providing the service free or at a discounted rate. Representatives from Smart tell Rappler they are working with Facebook on the specifics. Currently Smart also offers free access to Facebook via their Smart Net service.

Launched on iOS and Andorid in August of 2011, Facebook Messenger is a standalone mobile chat application based on Facebook’s web based messaging service. The product was seen as a response to the growing popularity of chat applications such as WhatsApp and then plans by Apple then to launch iMessage.

According to latest statistics by Facebook 3 out of 4 people on Facebook send a message on the platform each month making it one of the most popular activities on the social network. – Rappler.com
