Magical moments happen at peaceful, serene Lake Holon

In 1995, more than 50 people died when Lake Holon, also known as Lake Maughan in Tboli, South Cotabato, overflowed.

Over 30 million cubic meters of water from the lake went down to low lying areas of South Cotabato due to the tragedy.

The lake, located atop the dormant Mt. Parker, is locally known as Melibengoy. (IN PHOTOS: 8 PH lakes to add to your travel bucket list

The volcano’s English name is taken from an American General, General Frank Parker, who spotted the mountain and claimed to have “discovered” it during a flight he piloted in 1934.

Historical accounts revealed Mt. Parker erupted three times over the past 3,800 years. The last explosion was on January 4, 1641 where it created the formation of the crater lake.

On September 6, 1995, local officials reported what they believed was volcanic activity at Lake Maughan. The alleged activity caused landslides and floodings along Ga-o River which drains Lake Maughan and joins Allah River in the north. Due to this phenomenon, the government installed monitoring equipment which established that the so-called activity was man-made.

The local tourism office reported they have frequent trekkers, both foreigners and locals, due to the majestic view of the lake, one of the tourist destinations in the south. (READ: At stunning Lake Holon, peace and quiet await
