MANILA, Philippines – In past national elections, Cagayan de Oro City (CDO) has had high voter turnouts. In the 2013 elections alone, about 80.61% of the city’s registered voters took to the polls to elect the leaders they want.

As of the October 2013 barangay elections, there were some 285,645 voters who registered in CDO, the capital of Misamis Oriental. The province has 800,000 registered voters as of July 2015.

CDO also serves as the regional center and central business hub of Region X or Northern Mindanao, the 2nd most vote-rich region in Mindanao with 2.46 million registered voters.

During the 2010 presidential elections, former president Joseph Ejercito Estrada won the province’s vote with 93,767 votes, with President Benigno Aquino III trailing behind with 69,554 votes.

The vice presidential race then was far from close. Vice President Jejomar Binay won by a landslide there with 115,938 votes, leaving Mar Roxas with 70,116 votes.

In the upcoming 2016 presidential elections, how and who will CDO vote for?

#PHVote Challenge

In May 2015, Rappler launched #PHVote: The Leader I Want, the theme of our 2016 presidential elections coverage. As we enter yet another crucial point in our country’s history, we in Rappler believe that the youth have major roles to play in choosing the right leaders.

To empower the Filipino youth in choosing the leaders the country deserves, Rappler and its civic engagement arm, MovePH, will hold #PHVote Challenge: CDO’s #TheLeaderIWant. The event aims to engage the youth and get their sentiments on issues they want to raise in the upcoming elections.

The event will be held on Thursday, December 10, from 1 pm to 5 pm at the Nursing Amphitheater of Xavier University, Rappler’s partner for this event.
