In partnership with UP Los Baños, social news network Rappler will gather development communication practitoners, students, and the academe for the fifth leg of its 'Social Media for Social Change' chat series

MANILA, Philippines — “Expose yourself to greatness and passion for excellence,” 2012 Ramon Magsaysay Award laureate Dr Romulo Davide said about his pursuit of knowledge that paved the way for his groundbreaking work that produced more than 100 scientific papers.

Davide, a professor emeritus at the University of the Philippines Los Baňos (UPLB), was cited for his “steadfast passion in placing the power and discipline of science in the hands of Filipino farmers, who have consequently multiplied their yields, created productive farming communities, and rediscovered the dignity of their labor.”

In keeping with the university’s tradition of cultivating knowledge for people empowerment and development, Rappler will hold the fifth leg of its “Social Media for Social Change Chat Series” on Sept 19, 2012 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the SEARCA auditorium in UPLB.

UPLB, a constituent university of the country’s premiere state university, is known to be the seedbed of excellence in agriculture, bio-technology and environmental studies.

Development workers

Heralding the theme, “Pushing Development Forward,” this gathering seeks to bring together more than 300 development communication practitioners, teachers and students from UPLB, nearby universities and colleges, and community media institutions in the province of Laguna.

Rappler CEO and executive editor Maria Ressa will headline the event with her keynote address about the power of social media and how it can bring about social change.

Dr Serlie B. Jamias, Director of the Office of Public Relations, will share how the university is using the Internet and social media in dealing with challenges that the academic institution is facing.

Veteran journalist and Rappler’s citizen journalism director Chay Hofileña will also present insights on how development issues can find their way into mainstream media.

Social media head Michael Josh Villanueva will discuss how to use social media platforms to push development topics.

Finally, Patricia Evangelista, one of Rappler’s multimedia reporters, will talk about why she tells compelling stories of people.

The chat series — previously held in Baguio, Davao, Manila and Naga — are organized by Move.PH, Rappler’s citizen journalism arm.

Rappler consists of journalists committed to informing Filipinos and inspiring them to interact and participate in nation-building by providing a credible, creative, and interactive platform through social media.

The Los Baños leg of the chat series is sponsored by Smart Communications and co-organized by the Office of the UPLB Chancellor, the Development Communication Graduate Student Association (DEVCOM-GRADSA), Office of Public Relations (OPR), College of Development Communication (CDC) and the UPLB Foundation Incorporated (UPLB-FI).
