Santiago, Poe top Iloilo universities mock polls
Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago tops two out of 3 mock university polls in Iloilo while Poe wins in one university.

ILOILO, Philippines – Who is the top presidential bet of Ilonggo students?

Presidential candidate Miriam Defensor-Santiago topped two out of the three mock-polls conducted independently by different Iloilo based universities: PHINMA University of Iloilo (UI), West Visayas State University (WVSU) and Central Philippine University (CPU).

Santiago won the online polls conducted by CPU and WVSU while Poe took the lead at the PHINMA-UI mock elections.

Senator Santiago, who hails from Iloilo, claimed during her hometown sortie last April 13, she claimed that between herself, Roxas and Poe, she’s the only legitimate Ilonggo.

Santiago is also a top pick among most university polls across the country. Her campaign team is optimistic that her landslide victory in Western Visayas – where she won 98% of the votes  during the 1992 presidential elections – can be repeated in the May 2016 elections.

Centralians speak up

National Youth Commission-Assistant Secretary for Visayas, Jo Jan Paul Penol, an alumnus of Central Philippine University and a former Editor-in-chief of the Central Echo, initiated the poll on In The Dumps, an interactive Facebook group composed of more than 12,000 students and alumni of Central Philippine University. It was moderated by the Central Echo, the official student media of CPU,

The poll, which ran from April 20-26, showed 60.08% of respondetns would vote for for Santiago, followed by Duterte with 27.41%, Roxas with 5.51%, Poe with 4.16% and Binay with 0.19%.

According to Ernesto Saquibal, a political science professor of CPU, majority of the students chose Miriam because of her consistency. He also said students are attracted to the ideals espoued by Santiago.

Tingog sang taga-West

With 50.44% of the total votes, Santiago also topped the online mock presidential polls held from March 21-28 and organized by the Forum-Dimensions – the official student publication of West Visayas State University.  Duterte received 34.07%, Roxas got 0.88%, Poe was at 0.57% and Binay had 0.08%.

Most students look up to her mostly because of her academic achievements. She’s a good role model to the youth, and she studies the trends that appeal to the youth, takes note of them and mixes her signature sass, making her quips original, fresh and very appealing. This could be translated only in terms of demographics. Miriam appeals mostly to the voting youth, so it’s possible that most, if not all, of the youth vote, will go to Miriam,” said Joseph Marzan, an incoming 4th year BA Journalism student from WVSU College of Communications.

Santiago was the commencement speaker in the university’s commencement exercises in 2014.

The Ilonggo vote

Meanwhile, Poe dominated the mock elections organized by PHINMA-University of Iloilo, earning 37.62% of votes. Duterte came in second with 30.95%, followed by Roxas with 16.50%, Santiago with 10.24% and Binay with 4.6%.

Over 1,000 respondents, composed of students, faculty and staff of the said university, casted their votes on paper ballots on March 22.

Poe who also traces her roots to Iloilo, campaigned in the university on February 15, where she presented her platform of government and engaged the students and faculty in an open forum.

“I think nakabulig gid ang pag-campaign nila Grace Poe sa school san nagligad sa pagdaog ya. Sa pag-campaign ya daad, nabal-an ko nga makabulig gid sya sa pagbag-o sang Pilipinas, kay the way she talks to people, ma-feel mo gid nga tuod ang ginahambal ya,” Shaira Jane Tantiado, a BSA 3rd year student shared.

(I think her campaign in the school really helped her win the mock elections. When she was here, we realized that she can help change the Philippines; the way she talked made people feel that she was true to her promises.)

Despite lagging in national surveys, Santiago maintains she will fight until the end.  – with reports from  Vivienne Songcayawon, Carl Alonsagay, and Gem Rose Cavalida/ Rappler.com
