Cebuano supporters: ‘Miriam Magic’ still alive
Around 100 volunteers traverse the streets of Cebu and Mandaue to convince residents to vote for Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Cebuano supporters of presidential bet Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago (MDS) assembled a caravan across the streets of Cebu and Mandaue on Saturday, May 7, the last day of the campaign period.

According to Mark Angelo Arcega, MDS Cebu Chapter Media Relations Officer, the objective of the caravan was “to inform the silent majority and the grassroots in barangays that the Miriam Magic is still alive.”

The volunteers and supporters wanted to show the citizens of the most vote-rich province in the country that Santiago still has strong support from the youth and that she is a viable candidate. (READ: The Last Battle of Miriam Defensor Santiago)

“She’s the most qualified. Other candidates combined are nothing compared to what Miriam has done for the country. Her sickness did not stop her from serving her country,” said Jam Masamayor, one of the youth volunteers.

Another youth supporter, Albert Arceo, expressed her thoughts on why Miriam is her president.

“She’s very passionate in fighting corruption. She achieved so many things. Objectively, I like her platforms (because) they are very specific. There’s a concrete action on what she wants to do. She’s an inspiration to me and to the youth,” Arceo said.

The caravan lasted for three hours under a 32°C-temperature. Despite the hardship of staying under the heat of the sun, for first-time voter Francis Tumbiga, the experience was very much worth it.

Some of the supporters remained at the headquarters to complete the posting of canpaign materials at the different barangays in Cebu before 12 midnight.

While Santiago is at the tail-end of national poll surveys, the presidential candidate dominates surveys conducted in different schools. While not as active in the campaign trail as her other contenders, the senator’s movement in many provinces are led by youth and student volunteers – Rappler.com
