MANILA, Philippines – On February 21, Rappler visited Laoag, Ilocos Norte to sit down with local journalists, businessmen and members of the academe for a frank discussion of issues close to the hearts of Ilocanos.

Chay Hofileña, head of Move.PH – Rappler’s citizen journalism arm, and Voltaire Tupaz conducted the roundtable discussion with the help of Northwestern University President Liza Nicolas. Topics disscussed ranged from local politics to the rise of large malls in Laoag.

Local blogger and travel expert Tina Tan featured the discussion in her blog: Blauearth.com. Tina is also a member of the Laoag Eco-Adventure Development (LEAD) Movement, a group of outdoor enthusiasts who aim to promote Laoag as a outdoor tourist spot.

The following day, the rest of the Rappler team followed for #MoveIlocos. Rappler’s Maria Ressa, Josh Villanueva, Paterno Esmaquel, and Patricia Evangelista shared their insights about journalism’s evolution and the potential of social media to push positive social change in the world. – Rappler.com
