Rappler artists: We raise our pens #JeSuisCharlie

MANILA, Philippines – We raise our pens in solidarity with the international community condemning the killing of cartoonists from Charlie Hebdo.

Our “pen” is what we use to exercise the fundamental freedom of expression. Through it, we create, agitate, provoke, challenge the status quo, stir discomfort and anger, reflect society’s values and inanities, and even influence thought and action. (READ: EDITORIAL: We are Charlie)

Because of the power it wields, terrorists and other vested interests will repeatedly attempt to stop it. This is what happened with Charlie Hebdo whose cartoonists and artists were mercilessly gunned down.

In sympathy with them, we, artists of Rappler, wield our pens to depict the brutality of extremists. We join the global outrage against the senseless violence inflicted on colleagues from Charlie Hebdo.
