Customs launches Balikbayan Tax Calculator app
The application estimates the amount of custom duties and taxes Filipinos will need to pay for sending items home

MANILA, Philippines – To address the heavy volume of inquiries on customs tax and duties, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Tuesday, July 12, launched the BalikBayan Tax Calculator, a free mobile application that is now downloadable on all android devices.

Due to the heavy volume of inquiries on customs tax and duties… from here and abroad, the Bureau decided to come up with a mobile application that is accessible and can readily assist our balikbayan, OFWs, and the public in general,” said the BOC in a press release.

The application estimates the amount of custom duties and taxes that users will need to pay for commonly sent items based on their declared value. It also comes with answers to frequently asked question on balikbayan boxes, parcels, and other related matters.

OFWs who sent balikbayan boxes home will also be able to track and check the status of their shipments using the application’s BalikBayan Box Tracker.

“Customs encourages the public, not just balikbayan and OFWs, to download and try this mobile application so they would know the basics in importation and payment of duties and taxes,” said the BOC.

To fully optimize the functions of the app, users are advised to be ready with information such as value of the items for purpose of tax computation or the Bill of Lading number, for balikbayan box tracking.

The BalikBayan Tax Calculator will also be available for iOS users soon. – Rappler.com
