MANILA, Philippines – Moving to the Philippines isn’t something that crossed the mind of 29-year-old Sanne Sevig of Sweden before her life got hectic.
But after growing tired of her corporate lifestyle, and upon the suggestion of a friend who lived in Manila, she sold everything, packed her bags and left.
”I was at a bus stop and it was 30 degrees below zero. My car had broken down and I did not feel my toes. Then I thought – I don’t give a shit about Sweden,” she was quoted on the Swedish website Ett annat Liv.
“I had too many things going on at once and was never satisfied,” she added. She was from the countryside, and worked as a project manager at a Stockholm clothing company. She was also managing her own company and “lecturing all over Sweden.” It was an unhealthy lifsetyle that she needed to change.
She lived in Manila for a while, but she noticed that she was falling into the same habits that she wanted to shake from her previous lifestyle. When her company in Manila closed shop, she made her way down south to Siargao.
Siargao, an island in the province of Surigao, is now Sevig’s home. Paglaom, Cebuano for “hope,” is the name of her hostel on the island that she started with a Filipino partner.
How did Sanne, who is now also known as Sunny, adjust to island living? Has she found her happiness? Read more of her story here.
