COLLABORATION. 54 filipino musicians from 7 different countries come together in aid of Yolanda survivors

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino musicians from all over the world put their voices together to create ‘One by One’ – a song to comfort the survivors of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

Music heals

“We believe music soothes and heals,” says Paola Lozare, writer of the song ‘One by One.’ With over 300 likes on SoundCloud, an online music sharing community, the song has quickly gained recognition from fellow users of the music sharing website.

Lozare wrote the song the day after Typhoon Yolanda ravaged parts of central Visayas. Aside from donating and volunteering their time, Lozare and her friends wanted to do something more as musicians.

“We wanted to contribute something really personal. Since we’re all singers and musicians, what better offering for us to make than the gift of song?” Lozare told Rappler.

One song, many voices

With the help of her good friend, Iko Mortensen Tan, Lozare was able to issue an open invitation on SoundCloud Philippines, an open network for Filipino Soundcloud users, for a grand collaboration on behalf of Yolanda Survivors.

Within three weeks, we got 54 Filipino Soundcloud users based in 7 different countries to send in their voice recordings,” says Lozare.

Instrumentals were created by user Jerome Cleofas with Rome John Gonong stringing the collaboration into a single song.

The song was launched on December 8, one month after Yolanda struck Eastern Visayas. In 20 days the song had over 7,000 plays. On December 30, the artists released a new music video of the song as they continue to organize a future charity event to benefit the survivors.

Through this song, Lozare and the other artists hope it can inspire the survivors and those who are helping them to rebuild their lives after Yolanda.

All we really want is to offer them some encouragement as they rebuild their lives, and help out in some small way,” said Lozare.

One by One

One by one, watch the waves break down
Over everything our hands have built
One by one, watch it wash away
Taking everything that we hold dear

Oh, this stormy weather, will it ever end?
Will the heavens ever close the skies the again?

Although one by one, we will all fall down
And broken on our knees we’re crying out
But one by one, we stand to our feet
And together in the face of our defeat

Sing you’ll never take us down
You’ll never drown us out
You’ll never suffocate the spirit inside us
We’ll never give this up
Never give up this fight
All that was lost will soon be found, one by one

Piece by piece, it all fell apart
So piece by piece we’ll build it up again
On this Rock we find our Saving Grace
And nothing in this world could ever take it away
