LIVE BLOG: Summit on #TaclobanDeclaration
The conference will launch a new international disaster risk reduction and management framework called the "Tacloban Declaration," replacing the decade-old Hyogo Framework for Action

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines will be hosting this year’s Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management from June 4 to 6.

Close to 150 government officials, disaster managers, business leaders, non-governmental organizations, and members of international organizations from 36 countries in Asia and Europe are expected to grace the summit.

The ASEM Manila Conference is being held at a crucial time when the decade-old Hyogo Framework of Action (HFA) adopted by the world community as the global paradigm on disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) is about to end in 2015. The Philippines aims to contribute to the new global architecture on DRRM with the ASEM Manila Conference document to be called “The Tacloban Declaration” which will embody new policies and principles for DRRM.

The new international DRRM framework will detail policy changes and new principles for preparing and responding to disaster to be adapted by the 36 participating countries of the forum.

Expected delegates include European Union Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid, and Crisis Kristalina Georgieva, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction Margareta Wahlstrom, and Vietnam Vice Minister of Agriculture Hoàng Văn Thắng.
