What should the government and civil society do to prevent another disaster like typhoon Yolanda?

CEBU CITY, Philippines – More than 6,000 people died and 1,700 remain missing when super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) hit the country in November 2013.

The natural calamity revealed system flaws and taught us hard lessons on the need to strengthen climate change adaptation and risk reduction mechanisms at all levels of governance.

What should the government and civil society do to prevent another disaster like typhoon Yolanda?

To answer this question, the Disaster Risk Reduction-Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA) Coalition, a group representing a diverse constituency of CSOs involved in disaster risk reduction and climate change in the Philippines, has come together to strengthen disaster resilience and support the recovery and rehabilitation of communities affected by Yolanda.

On March 26 to 27, national CSO representatives to the NDRRMC – DRRnet Philippines, the Ateneo School of Government, Center for Disaster Preparedness and World Vision – Aksyon Klima Pilpinas, Christian Aid and Oxfam – will convene in Cebu City to assess the response of the government and CSO to typhoon Yolanda.

Speaking at the Summit are Albay Gov. Joey Salceda, Social Watch Philippines Convenor Isagani Serrano, and Freedom from Debt Coalition Vice President Lidy Nacpil.

MovePH’s Raisa Serafica will be on board to keep you posted.
