MANILA, Philippines – Christmas is one of the most anticipated holidays in the Philippines.
It’s the time to be merry as well as the time to share. A season of giving, it reminds us of the less fortunate who have less in life and who would greatly appreciate whatever is shared with them.
Several non-governmental organizations have been working hard to help those in need throughout the year. But with limited resources, they can only do so much. They certainly can do a lot more with help from those who can afford to.
A more meaningful and less materialistic Christmas is possible. How? By reaching out to those in need or helping those who help those in need. Rappler’s #HungerProject lists 8 NGOs at the frontlines fighting hunger, malnutrition, and poverty among children across the Philippines. They’ve been written about and featured in the #HungerProject microsite. We list some of them here and describe what they do in the hope of helping them do their work better.
You can do your bit during the holiday season. Reach out to them and those in need. No amount is too big or too small as long as it’s used for the needs of kids. Any contribution from a generous soul can do wonders to the life and the future of a child. Share with us your experience afterwards.
1. SOS Children’s Village Philippines
SOS Children’s Village Philippines is a private, non-political, non-denominational organization providing long-term family-based care and education to children in need.
There are 8 villages across the country: Alabang, Batangas, Cebu, Davao, Tacloban, Samar, Iloilo, and Bataan. Each village has 8-14 houses, and each house is occupied by 8-10 children who are looked after by a “house mother.”
The village setting aims to provide the children a fun, safe, and nurturing environment where they can interact with other children. SOS also tries to reunite siblings who were once separated.
Children are provided with all their needs, including college scholarships.

3. Gawad Kalinga’s Kusina ng Kalinga
What sets this program apart from others is that it utilizes the community – parents, guardians, and even the teachers of the children – and involves them in the feeding program process.
By promoting bayanihan in the community, Kusina ng Kalinga ensures that everyone understands his part in battling hunger and malnutrition among children in the Philippines.
In the program’s first two months of implementation, at least 3,000 children in Typhoon Yolanda-affected areas were given right meals and nutrients for better health.
The foundation needs P2,000 ($45) to provide one child a meal each day for a year.
Gawad Kalinga is a Philippine-based poverty alleviation movement. It aims to end poverty for more than 5 million families in the country.

4. Save the Children
Believing that the right to a healthy, educated, and safe future of each child isn’t achieved by many, the quality of life of underprivileged children is the focus of the organization as it provides both emergency and long-term support.
Its various programs (livelihood, educational scholarships, and health facilities improvement) made a difference in the lives of more than 5.1 million children – and even adults – in 2013.
Save the Children works hard to change the landscape and reality of millions of children in the Philippines in the years to come.

It also provides seminars and orientation for parents and guardians of children to ensure that they will be well taken care of at home.
Nutrition Jumpstart project also promotes health and nutrition among children and women by providing the appropriate nutrients that their body needs in very critical stages such as pregnancy.
The programs of World Vision helped eradicate the number of underweight children in 24 target areas in 2012 by more than 2%. At least 8,000 families have also been trained on proper sanitation, hygiene, and nutrition.
