MANILA, Philippines – Another high-ranking Liberal Party official is set to takeover the much-coveted Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), according to sources privy to Malacañang and the ruling party’s plans.
Western Samar Representative and LP secretary-general Mel Senen Sarmiento is set to take over the powerful DILG, after its current chief, administration standard-bearer Manuel Roxas II announced his plans to step down.
Roxas has headed the department since 2012, after the tragic death of the late Jesse Robredo.
As DILG chief, Sarmiento will have administrative oversight of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP). He will also have control of the department that has supervision over local governments
According to sources, Sarmiento has practically bagged the position, pending the approval of President Benigno Aquino III. Aquino and Roxas are set to meet Monday afternoon, August 3, to officially discuss Roxas’ resignation and his possible appointment.
But there is another option to replace Roxas: someone from within the department, Undersecretary for Local Goverment Austere Panadero, according to a source close to the Palace.
Another source, however, said there are doubts over choosing Pandero as DILG chief, particularly because he was seen to be “loyal” to former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in past years.
The coming 2016 elections will also be a factor – the ruling party would prefer having a clear ally take over the powerful DILG post. – Rappler.com
