Abandoned shoes at NAIA found with P10M heroin
The discovery is made as airport personnel sort through unclaimed items left behind by passengers

MANILA, Philippines – Airport personnel discovered P10 million worth of heroin concealed in men’s shoes left at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the Manila International Airport Authority said on Wednesday, August 19.

The MIAA said in a press statement that its Lost and Found Section personnel made the discovery while sorting out unclaimed items at the NAIA Terminal 1 warehouse on Monday, August 17.

They first came across a “suspiciously heavy” pair of black Clark Active Air Shoes, prompting closer scrutiny. When the soles of the shoes were cut open, airport personnel found 500 grams of heroin in each shoe.

Another pair of the same style and brand were found inside the box of unclaimed footwear, containing another kilogram of heroin.

The MIAA said the drugs were carefully wrapped in dark plastic material shaped like the bottom of the shoe.

Photo from MIAA The shoes and the drugs were turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), which confirmed the substance to be heroin. The drug has an estimated street value of P5 million per kilo.

The MIAA said it is conducting an investigation to determine when the shoes were found and turned over to the MIAA. All items left unattended by passengers in Manila airport terminals are stored at the NAIA warehouse, where they can be claimed.

MIAA General Manager Jose Angel Honrado said airport security personnel “are always on heightened alert in scrutinizing items, considering that drug traffickers are utilizing innovative ways to transport dangerous substances.”

The Bureau of Customs reported this month that it had seized up to P195 million ($4.33 million) in illegal drugs as of June in the face of rampant smuggling. – Rappler.com
