BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – Four small-scale miners died of gas poisoning in two separate incidents in Itogon, Benguet, on Sunday, August 23. 

In a mining tunnel at Baguio Gold in Tuding village in Itogon, it was a case of the miners rescuing each other until they all died of gas poisoning. 

At about 2 pm, Bambi Dongla, 28, fell unconscious after inhaling gas inside their gold tunnel. His companion, Ismael Sadya-as, 25, went down the tunnel to rescue Dongla, but he too expired upon inhaling the substance.  

Three hours later, at about 5:30 pm, their foreman Tula Mateo, 53, went down to rescue the two, but he was also weakened by the poision and later died.

The bodies of the 3 miners were retrieved at 9:30 pm Sunday, the police said. 

Also on Sunday, the body of Abe Danao Amyao was recovered inside the mining tunnel at Reno, also in Tuding.

According to the police, Amyao’s brother Larry noticed that Abe missing from their bunk house. Surmising that his brother was still in the tunnel, he called another miner to help rescue Abe.

They were able to bring out Abe at about 12:30 pm and immediately brought him to the Saint Louis Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. – Rappler.com
