MANILA, Philippines – The death toll from floods, landslides and other unfortunate incidents resulting from the relentless rain that swamped Metro Manila and nearby provinces last week has climbed to 92.

In its 9 p.m. situation update on August 12, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that 66 of the victims drowned and 12 were buried by landslides. Others were killed by lightning, crushed by toppled trees and electrocuted, among others.

A total of 11 persons were injured, 4 are still missing, while 62,846 were rescued.

NDRRMC also reported that the number of people affected or displaced by heavy rain and floods increased to 3,307,874. These individuals are found in 16 provinces in Regions I, III, IV-A, IV-B, VI and the National Capital Region (NCR).

Some 877,607 people are currently served inside and outside evacuation centers. NDRRMC reiterated in its update that some evacuation centers have closed down as people began to return to their homes.
