Chinese consul general shot in Cebu
(2nd UPDATE) Chinese Consul General Song Ronghua was wounded while two of his colleagues died in the attack, police say

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – Chinese Consul General Song Ronghua was shot in Cebu along with two others on Wednesday, October 21, police said.

Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor said Song was wounded while two of his colleagues died in the attack.

Mayor said one of those killed was the deputy consul, while the other is the consulate finance officer.

Two Chinese were arrested following the attack, one of whom is the husband of a diplomat at the consulate, Mayor told Agence France-Presse.

The other person arrested was a woman who also worked at the embassy, according to Mayor.

He said police retrieved a semi-automatic .45 Colt pistol from the scene.

Consul ‘undergoing treatment’

The attack occurred at 1:30 pm (0530 GMT) at a popular Cebu restaurant that serves Filipino food.

In a text message, the Chinese Embassy in Manila said it “is still verifying the facts,” and will update reporters soon.

Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesman Charles Jose said the DFA has “no comment at this time while we’re verifying the report.”

On Wednesday, Cebu Daily News reported this “noontime shooting incident inside the Lighthouse Restaurant along General Maxilom” in Cebu City.

Cebu Daily News said Song “is now undergoing treatment” in a hospital there.

Sun Star Cebu reported that the alleged perpetrator is a Chinese woman named Li Qing Ling. A police report confirms this piece of information. – with reports from Bea Cupin/Rappler.com
