Blackout hits parts of Mindanao after bombing of NGCP tower
The NGCP says it will begin restoration activities as soon as the area is secured by government forces

CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines – Several areas in Mindanao are experiencing a blackout after one of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) towers in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, was bombed Thursday night, October 29.

Beth Ladaga, media relations and public information officer of NGCP Mindanao, said in a text mesaage that the tower in the village of Patani was hit by a bomb at around 9:20 pm.

The Agus 1 (80MW) and Agus 2 (180MW)  plants are now isolated from the grid, causing power loss in several areas. The power provider has yet to release the list of affected areas.

NGCP will begin restoration activities as soon as the area is secured by government forces.

The NGCP has been needing police and military assistance in its operations lately.

Recently, it failed to immediately fix a tower in Lanao del Sur after a trip-off because the owner of the land beside prevented NGCP personnel from accessing the property. This resulted in power loss.

NGCP is facing right-of-way problems in Lanao del Sur, with landowners planting trees under its power lines, causing power trip-offs and isolating its power assets.

In January, blasts hit NGCP towers in Maguindanao and North Cotabato, just days apart. – Rappler.com
