(UPDATED) San Sebastian Cathedral rector Felix Pasquin says the Paris attacks should 'strengthen us in our faith in the Lord Jesus as the conquerer of evil'

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines (UPDATED) – The church here is hoping that the recent terrorist attacks in Paris will strengthen one’s faith.

The San Sebastian Cathedral offered a “solidarity mass with victims of [the] Paris terrorist attacks” on Wednesday, November 18. A mini French flag was displayed at the altar and was surrounded by 129 lighted candles, representing the number of fatalities.

In his homily, Father Felix Pasquin, rector of San Sebastian Cathedral, said: “Let this tragedy strengthen us in our faith in the Lord Jesus as the conqueror of evil and strengthen more our resolve like Paul brings the good news of God’s love to all.”

Pasquin said that “terrorist attacks do not deter us in our witnessing and mission because we believe in the power of conscience to convert and change.” (READ: ISIS claims Paris attacks)

Pope Francis said that the tragedy in Paris could be a piecemeal of World War 3. United States President Barrack Obama said that those attacks in Paris are a crime against humanity and an attack against universal values we share. French President Francois Hollande declared that such terrorist act is a war against France,” he said.

He added that there is an outpouring of grief, sorrow, and condemnation and an incessant call for prayers.

“We condemn such killings due to the fact that they flagrantly violate God’s Fifth commandment, ‘Thou shall not kill.’ All those who have disseminated hatred and ideological fanaticism that leads to killings and wars are indeed murderers,” Pasquin said.

“In the darkness of terror and horror that envelopes us, it is in looking at the crucified Christ that we see light and it is in hearing his words, ‘do not be afraid’ that we get strength,” added the priest.

“At the very heart of salvation history, is our faith in Christ victory, which will be ours if we trust and follow Him. He is our Lord over all, in view of the victory over death on the cross. In Him is life.” – Rappler.com
