In a September 8 report the agency posted at 10 pm, the NDRRMC said a certain Gloria Sumayang from Brgy. Lumangbayan in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro died on September 5 after developing signs and symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection and suffering fever and rashes.

“Initial differential diagnosis to consider was Kawasaki Disease but manifested high index of suspicion that the condition is Meningococcal in nature,” the report said.

NDRRMC added that 30 families in the same barangay has been placed on quarantine and under observation by the Municipal Health Office, while the body of Sumayang was immediately buried to avoid further spread of infection.

Meningococcemia is a highly contagious and lethal disease that infects the blood stream. The Department of Health claims that signs and symptoms of this disease include:
