Aquino net satisfaction rating lowest since 2015 – poll
(UPDATED) President Benigno Aquino III gets a 'downgrade' from the 'good' rating of net +32% in December 2015. The SWS says this represents the second successive quarter that his satisfaction ratings have slid.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – President Benigno Aquino III’s public satisfaction rating dropped 3 months before he is set to leave Malacañang, results of a survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) revealed Monday, April 18.

With a net satisfaction rating of +27 – considered “moderate” – for the first quarter of 2016, Aquino has his lowest rating since the first quarter of 2015, the SWS said.

The President gets a “downgrade” compared to his previous satisfaction rating of net +32% from December 2015, a “good” rating for the last quarter of 2015. This, according to the survey firm, represents the second successive quarter that his satisfaction ratings have slid.

According to the survey results, first revealed in BusinessWorld, 57% of the survey respondents are satisfied with Aquino, while 30% are dissatisfied and 14% are undecided.

The net satisfaction rating is defined by the SWS as the difference between satisfaction and dissatisfaction ratings.

Highest satisfaction in Visayas; NCR most dissatisfied

The President had the highest public satisfaction rating in the Visayas, at 69%, followed by Mindanao at 58%, Balance Luzon at 54%, and the National Capital Region (NCR) at 43%.

More people from NCR said they are dissatisfied with Aquino (44%), followed by those from Balance Luzon (32%), Mindanao (28%), and the Visayas (18%).

With this, he got a 0% net satisfaction rating in NCR, +23% in Balance Luzon, +50% in the Visayas, and +30% in Mindanao.

More rural respondents (62%) are satisfied with the President compared to those in urban areas (49%), and he has higher satisfaction ratings among class E (60%) and D (56%), compared to those belonging to class ABC (53%).

Dissatisfaction with Aquino is higher among urban dwellers (37%) compared to rural respondents (25%); and higher among class ABC (37%) compared to classes D (31%) and E (24%).

Slightly more women (58%) than men (55%) are satisfied with the President, the survey also showed.

Aquino’s net public satisfaction ratings remain generally positive, but appear to be on a downward trend compared to the ratings from the 4th quarter of 2015.

Net satisfaction ratings with 3 months left

Compared to previous presidents, Aquino is still faring better when put side-by-side with his predecessor, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, whose net satisfaction rating was a “very bad” -53%, 3 months before leaving office. Arroyo left office with a -17% net satisfaction rating in June 2010.

Meanwhile, former presidents Joseph Estrada, Fidel Ramos, and Corazon Aquino had net satisfaction ratings of +19%, +30%, and +13%, respectively, in comparable time periods in their presidencies.

Palace Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr also noted that Aquino’s +27 rating is “still high for a President who is completing the last semester of his term.”

Coloma added: “President Aquino has always worked for the welfare and well-being of our bosses – regardless of survey ratings. He is grateful for the people’s unstinting trust in his leadership. We believe in the fairness and vision of our people who will certainly opt for continuity of good governance and attainment of inclusive growth when they cast their votes next month.”

The question given to the survey respondents was:

(“Please tell me how satisfied or dissatisfied you are with the performance of Benigno Aquino III as President of the Philippines. Are you very satisfied, somewhat satisfied, undecided if satisfied or dissatisfied, somewhat dissatisfied, very dissatisfied, or you have not ever heard or read anything about Benigno Aquino III?”)

The SWS classifies net satisfaction ratings as follows:

  • Excellent: +70% and above
  • Very Good: +50% to +69%
  • Good: +30% to +49%
  • Moderate: +10% to +29%
  • Neutral: +9% to -9%
  • Poor: -10% to -29%
  • Bad: -30% to -49%
  • Very Bad: -50% to -69%
  • Execrable: -70% and below

The survey, conducted using face-to-face interviews from March 30 to April 2, had a total of 1,500 adult respondents nationwide, the SWS said.

The results had an error margin of +/- 3% at the national level, and +/- 6% at the regional level.

The SWS said the survey is non-commissioned, and is “released as a public service.” – Rappler.com
