BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Four construction workers were killed while 14 others, including the driver, were injured after they figured in a vehicular accident along Circumferential Road in Barangay Taculing in this city at around 8 am on Saturday, July 2.

Police identified the fatalities as Armen Algabre of Tagulwan, Cagayan, Misamis; Lito Tuyogon of Bais City, Negros Oriental; Jerwin Dotosme of Borbon, Cebu; and Regie Vargas of Bugo, Cebu.

Chief Inspector Jovil Sedel, chief of Bacolod Police Station 6, said that the Mazda R2 mini-truck, which was boarded by the victims, tried to overtake a motorcycle it was tailing behind.

The driver, however, lost control of the wheel, causing the truck to swerve to the opposite lane, hitting an electrical post and falling on its side.

Due to the impact, some of the victims were thrown off the truck. 

The victims were on their way to work at the City Mall construction site in Barangay Mandalagan. 

Algabre and Tuyogon died on the spot while other victims were brought to a hospital, where Dotosme and Vargas where pronounced dead upon arrival.

The truck driver was identified as Romel Labang of Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. He also sustained injuries and was treated as an outpatient.

He is now detained at the police station and will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide and physical injuries. 

Sedel said the victims’ employer, DK2 Construction and Consultancy Corp, will extend assistance to their workers. – Rappler.com
