CAMP DARAPANAN, Maguindanao – Chanting “Allahu akbar (God is the greatest),” hundreds of armed fighters of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) gathered in this camp hours before the rebel group’s historic signing of the Framework Agreement with the government.
MILF commander Mohammad Nassif said that the assembly inside Camp Darapanan was not meant to be a show of force but a celebration of how far the peace process has reached.
The MILF fighters said they will be monitoring the signing of the peace plan on a TV set and through a battery-operated radio.
“Of course, we are very happy. Finally we will be able to claim what is ours and proudly say that we have fought hard for this,” an MILF fighter said, asking not to be named.
Like the Bangsamoro Leaders Assembly in July this year, the atmosphere inside the camp is festive.
Brightly colored tents were built around the main stage of the camp, with members of the MILF community chanting.
The armed guards at the perimeter of the camp are on alert and highly visible but the people inside are calm and jubilant.
MILF commanders delivered speeches reminding supporters and fighters of the value of the Bangsamoro struggle.
Peace rally
Thousands of residents have also assembled in Cotabato City’s plaza to show their support for the 2012 Framework Agreement.
Students and teachers marched from their schools waving green flags and placards.
Similar peace rallies are simultaneously being held in Pikit, North Cotabato and in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao.
Peace advocates will also have a symbolic signing of the Framework Agreement in Davao City’s Freedom Park. – Rappler.com
