25 women trekkers rescued in Negros Occidental

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines – Twenty-five women trekkers were rescued at Barangay Cabatangan in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, on Sunday, August 28, after they were stranded due to bad weather.

The experienced mountaineers – who came from various parts of the country including Manila and Cebu – called for help after their companion, 33-year-old Noreen Grace Cañasa of Cebu City, slipped and hit a rock.

She fractured her left tibia, a bone above the ankle, said Geoffrey Gutierrez, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and Talisay City Rescue and Disaster Assistance Network.

Rescuers received a call for help around 4:30 pm Saturday, and reached the group 3 hours later, he said.

Gutierrez said that heavy rains, slippery terrains, and zero visibility hampered their rescue operations, which lasted for 14 hours. The rescuers had difficulty bringing down the injured climber, and took turns carrying her on a stretcher.

He said they reached the base Sunday morning while the injured trekker was brought to a hospital in Bacolod City.

Gutierrez said that the trekkers, who belonged to the Philippine Women’s Mountaineers, climbed in the area Saturday morning and were on their way to Tinagong Dagat in Mount Mandalagan. – Rappler.com
